Bridger, Ford and O^ÒNeill sit watching Lucas^Ò tape from the previous scene. Bridger Well? Any ideas anyone? Commander Ford? Ford I^Òd have to say I have no idea. The question is, how did he - whoever he is - hack into the Seaquest^Òs communications system and appear on your terminal? O^ÒNeill I^Òve checked but everything we have tells me it came from inside the boat. Whoever he is, he recorded that message right here. Ford No way. No-one walks onto this boat - without anyone noticing - and messes with the communications equipment - and then walks away. It doesn^Òt make sense. If he^Òd been in here, we^Òd know it. But if it^Òs some kind of ... I don^Òt know, attack on our systems, then why this ^Óhelp help help^Ô message? I just don^Òt get it. Bridger Could it be a prank? Some hacker kid getting his kicks out of making himself seem important? O^ÒNeill I don^Òt know sir, he seemed kind of serious to me. And, I don^Òt know, somehow ... familiar. Ford I know what you mean ... I feel as if I^Òve seen him before somewhere. Brodie comes in. Brodie You have to see this, Captain. I checked out the bridge security tapes and the kid is on them. Look. He puts a tape on and we see a fisheye lens view of the bridge with Lucas working at his station along with the rest of the crew. We see Danner^Òs arrival and his departure with Lucas. Bridger He isn^Òt breaking in to the boat, he^Òs leaving it. And who^Òs this guy? Rewind it a little. Brodie rewinds the tape. We see Lucas at his station, normal activity on the bridge, Danner^Òs arrival. Brodie rewinds again to Lucas working at his terminal, sharing a joke with O^ÒNeill (no sound) Bridger If that^Òs faked it^Òs as good as it gets. Who _is_ that kid? Commander, according to the duty roster, who was at that station on that shift? Brodie I^Òll do it (he checks a terminal). Someone called (mispronouncing) Wo-len-czak Bridger, Ford, O^ÒNeill (simultaneously, correcting the pronunciation automatically) Wolenczak Ford Wait a minute. Bridger You see what I mean? We _know_ him. Ford So what are you saying? Everyone on the boat has somehow overlooked the existence of a crewmember called Wolenczak? O^ÒNeill (remembering) Lucas. Bridger Yes. That sounds right. Lucas Wolenczak. Check the personnel files: do we have a crewmember called Lucas Wolenczak? Brodie According to this...yes we do. He^Òs some kind of computer genius, he^Òs a civilian - and he^Òs seventeen years old. Like that would really happen! It^Òs got to be some kind of trick. Some little computer junkie thought it would be funny to hack his way onto the boat. O^ÒNeill But what about the security cameras? The duty roster? Brodie Hacked. Bridger I don^Òt think so. But whatever the answer is, we need to find this kid. Either he^Òs a member of our crew who^Òs in trouble, or else he^Òs just walked through our security without leaving a footprint and we^Òre _all_ in trouble. Let^Òs get Dr Smith down here: is there anything that could account for us all having some kind of - I don^Òt know, collective memory loss. O^ÒNeill I can^Òt raise her on the intercom. Bridger Let^Òs get down there. Seaquest. Smith^Òs cabin. Day. Ford and Bridger break into Smith^Òs cabin. She is unconscious on the floor. They feel for a pulse. Bridger Get her to sickbay. And let^Òs do a roll call, Commander - see if there^Òs anyone else we can^Òt account for. Danner^Òs hideout: storeroom: day. Lucas is lying on a bunk, doubled up in pain, facing the wall, soaked in sweat. Danner comes into the room, takes a handful of Lucas' hair and turns him around to face him. Danner Ah. Good. You stopped screaming so I thought I^Òd better check you didn^Òt die on me. That would be ... inconvenient. Lucas is visibly struggling with the pain. Lucas Make it stop. Please. Danner But you know what you have to do to make it stop, Lucas. Just let go of the block. What kind is it? Did she do the ^Óyou clasp your hands, you make a wall^Ô thing? (Imitates Dr Smith, with a gesture of clasping the hands, flat palm to flat palm turning to curled fingers around curled fingers) Lucas Make it stop. Danner The pain will stop when the wall comes down. (he makes the reverse gesture, opening his hands and moving them apart) The wall comes down. You open up. And the pain will stop. Lucas breathes in sharply, almost at the point of giving way. But Danner is smiling just a little too broadly, enjoying the process just a little too much. Lucas Go to hell Seaquest: medical centre: day Dr Smith and Dagwood are lying injured; Smith is unconscious, Dagwood is moaning softly. Bridger and Ford watch anxiously as a medical technician checks their vital signs. Piccolo arrives carrying his kitbag, running straight to the sickbay as soon as he arrives on the boat from leave. Piccolo What^Òs happening? Owwwww! Dagwood Tony? Piccolo (clutching his head in pain) Dagwood - what^Òs going on? Dagwood (semi conscious) Bad. Bridger What are you doing here Tony? You^Òre supposed to be on leave. Piccolo Can^Òt you hear them Captain? I^Òve had, like, this voice in my head since last night. I had to get back here. Bridger You^Òve had psychic episodes before Tony: what is it that you^Òre feeling now? Dagwood Tony Piccolo I^Òm here buddy. It^Òs like that, Captain. Like they^Òre both calling to me for something. Bridger Then answer them. Piccolo I don^Òt know how! Bridger Yes you do. Piccolo tries to calm himself down and sense what Smith needs him to do. He suddenly reaches a decision, moves between Smith and Dagwood and takes each of them by the hand. He concentrates, closing his eyes. Abruptly Dagwood and Smith sit up, and Tony opens his eyes, each of them gasping in pain on a simultaneous indrawn breath. Smith Lucas! Dagwood Bad man. Bridger Who is Lucas? Piccolo What do you mean, who^Òs Lucas? Has something happened to the kid? Bridger You remember him? Piccolo Has this whole boat gone crazy? He^Òs my roomie, Captain, remember? Smith No, Tony, that^Òs it. They don^Òt remember. Dagwood The bad man took Lucas. Smith And he took your memories of him. Bridger We^Òll get him back. Blue Moon part VII Interior. Seaquest bridge. Day. Bridger He did _what_? O^ÒNeill Commander Ford went with Lieutenant Brody, sir. Bridger I told Brody to take a team and help Merle bring back Lucas. Commander Ford does _not_ constitute a team. O^ÒNeill No sir. And neither of them believes Lucas is really a member of the crew. Smith Nathan, we have to find them. Bridger They^Òll be all right. Even if they don^Òt know Lucas, neither Ford nor Brody would mistreat a prisoner. They^Òll bring him back and we^Òll straighten it all out. Smith But think of it from Lucas^Ò point of view. He^Òs been kidnapped, abused, and then rescued by someone he barely knows. Now when he thinks he^Òs finally safe and his friends have come to get him they don^Òt recognise him as a friend, in fact they believe he^Òs their enemy. What will that do to him? Bridger He^Òs a smart kid. He^Òll figure it out. The important thing is to get him back safe. Smith I don^Òt think so. I think finding himself with people he ought to trust but who don^Òt trust him could send him over the edge. Interior. Ford^Òs shuttle. Day Ford and Brody power up the vessel and move out. Lucas sits quietly at first, waiting to get home to the Seaquest. But then he notices the course Ford has set. Lucas We^Òre not going back to Seaquest? Brody That^Òs what you^Òve been aiming for all along, isn^Òt it? Ford No we^Òre not. We^Òre taking both of you to a lock up on shore. In a couple of days time it^Òll be clear who you are and then either we^Òll owe you an apology, or we can start proceedings against you. Lucas Proceedings? Who I am??? Commander, you _know_ me. Ford No; no we don^Òt. No-one on board Seaquest had ever heard of you yesterday. Lucas What do you mean? Brody Shut up. Lucas Let me speak to the Captain... Brody You aren^Òt going to speak to anyone. You^Òre just going to sit quietly in a cell for a couple of days until the memory block wears off on the rest of the Seaquest crew... Ford ...and then you^Òre going to jail. Merle begins to stir. Ford Stay right where you are. Merle (ignoring him, sitting up and holding her head) What happened - Lucas! You guessed right, then. Good. Danner^Òs still there? Lucas I- I think so. Merle You think so? Lucas, it^Òs important. You only get one chance with someone like Danner. He^Òll be a danger to you as long as you^Òre both alive. But the base will hold him, so long as no-one goes there that he can get to. (reading him telepathically) Oh, kid, you^Òre in a bad way. Hey, you two. Ford Please sit down ma^Òam. Merle (ignoring him: getting up and going forwards) Listen, guys, what are you doing about the kid? Brody He said sit down. Merle He^Òs been kidnapped, dammit. Danner held him for two days and nights - he^Òs been tortured, he^Òs exhausted and scared, he hasn^Òt eaten or drunk - so why isn^Òt he with a medic? Ford There^Òs some water in the back there. But you _are_ both going to jail until this memory thing is worked out. Merle picks up the water bottle and holds it up to Lucas who drinks thirstily. Merle Come on, guys, don^Òt get all jock on me. Take the handcuffs off him at least. Brody (pointing his gun at her) Sit down and be quiet. Merle Macho schmuck! She is enraged by Ford and Brody^Òs behaviour and, without thinking, lashes out at them telepathically. Brody drops the gun as if it has become red hot... ...but as she turns she sees Lucas is cringing back in his seat in horror, believing he made the wrong choice all along and that she is really Danner; that far from being safe with his friends he is in the last scene of a horror movie, where it turns out the monster isn^Òt really dead at all. Lucas Oh no... Merle Look, kid, don^Òt go psycho on me now... She moves towards him, using her mental powers to unlock his handcuffs, and reaching out to try to comfort him. However this is totally the wrong thing to do at this stage - he sees this as evidence that she is Danner, and it doesn^Òt help that Brody is completely out of it, catatonic. As Ford sees what is happening he sets the autopilot and then gets up, reaching for his gun, to subdue his two ^Óprisoners^Ô. Merle reflexively ^Óswats^Ô him mentally and he, too, bounces back into his chair looking stunned. In Lucas^Ò eyes all this is proof that Merle is really Danner and he is still a captive, only now two of his friends are in danger too. Lucas Don^Òt. Don^Òt hurt them. Please. Merle Will you get off of it? I^Òm _not_ Danner, and if you^Òd stop being hysterical for a moment you^Òd be able to work it out. I^Òm just angry that none of you gets it. You especially. You^Òre the computer genius, right? You should be used to people who think you^Òre dangerous because you can do stuff that they can^Òt. Well I can do mental stuff that you can^Òt: but I don^Òt do it against people^Òs will except to protect myself. I could take the memory spike out of these two but they don^Òt want me to so I respect that. Ford (with difficulty, fighting Merle^Òs mental compulsion to sit still and be quiet) You^Òre...both...under...arrest... Again Merle lashes out mentally without thinking it through and Ford crumples in pain. Lucas jumps out of his seat and puts himself between Ford and Merle, trying to cover Ford^Òs body with his own, as if Merle^Òs mental energy were a bullet he could take for his friend. Lucas Don^Òt. I give in. You win. Here. (he does the ^Óopen hands/the wall comes down^Ô gesture, releasing his mental block, completely opening himself to Merle. He begins to sob, at the end of his mental endurance.) Take it. Whatever you want. Just leave them alone. Let them go. Merle sits back down, in apparent meekness, disgusted with their lack of empathy, and especially with Lucas^Ò mistrust. Merle (softly) I^Òm _not_ Danner. Lucas sits back down. Ford and Brody sit up straight, looking back to normal. It is as if the last few moments have been erased except that Lucas is still sniffing quietly and looking at Merle in genuine fear. Interior. Prison. Day. We see Ford and Brody checking Merle and Lucas in to a UEO prison facility. The two phials of Blue Moon are placed on a shelf with the prisoners^Ò belongings. Lucas looks grey with exhaustion and is unresisting as he is processed and taken away to a cell. Merle submits to the process but the look she gives Ford and Brody as she is led away does not bode well for their futures if she meets them again. Exterior. Prison. Day. Bridger and Smith get out of a shuttle and look up at the forbidding prison walls. Bridger checks a hand-held scanner. Bridger This is it. Merle is here, at least. Come on. We^Òll soon have this straightened out. Smith I don^Òt think so. I^Òm not getting Merle at all. Bridger We^Òll see. They go inside. Interior. Prison complex. Day. Bridger goes up to the reception desk. We do not hear the conversation. While he talks to the staff our eyes wander around the area. We see the shelf where Lucas^Ò and Merle^Òs belongings were placed. Everything is still there - except for the two phials of Blue Moon. We follow Bridger and Smith as they are led down a corridor to the cell where Merle was put. The door is opened: but the cell is empty apart from the tracer Merle swallowed earlier which is now lying on the cell floor. We follow them into the next cell where they find Lucas. He is sitting in the corner of the cell hunched up. They go over to him but he does not react to their presence. For how can you be rescued from your prison when you no longer believe the possibility of rescue exists? Epilog. Exterior. Day We see Bridger and Smith standing over Lucas. The camera tracks back, through the prison walls, and back and back - and on the ground we see a torn up photograph of Merle with the words ^Óware psychic^Ô written on it. Day Bridger Where are they now? O^ÒNeill It^Òs an outpost of an abandoned fish farm. There^Òs nothing there except some basic life support. Bridger And you^Òre sure you^Òre getting three people^Òs signals? O^ÒNeill Aye sir. The tracer puts Merle there, and she^Òs with two other people. Henderson Let^Òs hope that one of them is Lucas. Smith It is. Bridger You can read them? At this distance? Smith I^Òm still drawing on Tony and Dagwood. Their strength is giving me an enormous range: the link is starting to blur but while it holds I can read them. Merle is there... and Lucas... and someone else. Another psychic. O^ÒNeill Is Lucas OK? Smith He^Òs been hurt, and he^Òs horribly afraid, but I think, physically, he^Òs OK so far. But he^Òs confused. He doesn^Òt know what to do, who to trust. He needs help. Henderson Can^Òt we send a team? Bridger Not yet. Let^Òs let Merle do what she promised. Smith gestures to Bridger and the two of them move away from the bridge so they can speak without being overheard. Bridger What is it? Smith I think it^Òs time for me to tell you a little more about what Merle is planning. Henderson could be right: we may need to send them some help. Bridger Well? Smith Lucas came to me after Clay Marshall forced the access codes from him when Clay was trying to steal Blue Moon from the Seaquest. Lucas was worried about the information he has in his head and how easily Clay had taken it from him. He asked me about blocking telepathic abilities and I showed him a few tricks, how to set up a block that would keep someone like Clay out, for a while. But we both knew it wouldn^Òt be enough, if one of Clay^Òs pupils came after him. Bridger And the two of you never thought of talking to me? Smith He came to me as a patient. He asked me not to tell you. Bridger And what did you come up with. Smith He wouldn^Òt tell me. But Merle did. When the dead man^Òs handle programme called you it also triggered a message to Merle. He had researched other psychics and found Merle was working with the police, on bringing psychic abilities into the criminal justice code. Bridger So she isn^Òt his girlfriend? Smith That was his cover story. He knew anyone who had the same abilities as Clay did would have the ability to read any plan he made to defend himself. And so he came up with Merle. Bridger How does she help? Smith Nathan, he^Òs seventeen years old. If you read him on the subject of a beautiful woman there is a whole slew of adolescent emotion masking anything else. He^Òs very resourceful. It might just have bought him some time; let Merle get close enough to get him away from Danner. But the timing will be tight: we have to be there when she needs back up, but not so soon that Danner can turn anyone we send against her. Interior: fish farm. Day Merle 1 still trapped inside the inner chamber, Merle 2 outside, near to Lucas. Merle 1 concentrates and Lucas picks up Danner^Òs gun and points it at Merle 2. Lucas Drop the weapon Merle 2 He^Òs messing with your head, Lucas. Fight him. Merle 1 Don^Òt listen to him. Shoot! Merle 2 (raising real Merle^Òs weapon to point at Lucas) This has a stun setting. That one doesn^Òt. I _will_ stun you, Lucas, if I have to. But can you kill someone? Lucas has no idea whether he is pointing the gun at Danner or at Merle and the conflict shows in his face. Lucas Can^Òt you just drop it, Merle? If you really are, Merle? Please. Merle 2 That isn^Òt you talking, Lucas, it^Òs Danner. He^Òs controlling you. Fight him. Lucas I won^Òt shoot unless I have to. But you have to drop the gun, Merle. Please. So that I know you^Òre you. Please! Merle 1 It^Òs Danner, kid. Shoot him. Merle 2 I^Òll use the stun, Lucas. Look: we won. He^Òs trapped. We leave and go back to the Seaquest. It^Òs over, Lucas. Just drop the gun and come on. And then Danner - whichever one he is - begins to take control of Lucas^Ò mind and we see him struggle against the impulse to turn the gun on himself. Slowly, slowly, his wrist turns and the gun turns towards his temple. Lucas^Ò arm shakes as he fights against the mental command but he is losing, and the gun is pointed at his head. His face is screwed up in anguish as he tries to resist the impulse to pull the trigger. Merle 2 raises the stunner - and then, abruptly, points it at Merle 1 and fires. Lucas drops his gun-hand instantly and sags against the wall, held up only by the strap still around his chest, utterly exhausted. Merle 2 You OK? Lucas I- Merle 2 I know. But you picked the right team. It^Òs over. Here. She takes the gun gently out of his hand and tucks it in her belt. He looks at her in alarm as she disarms him and she laughs. Merle 2 It^Òs OK. It^Òs me. Look, have the stunner if you still don^Òt believe me. She offers him the stunner but he shakes his head and leaves it lying at his feet. Merle 2 Come on. We have to get out of here before he wakes up. And then we can get back to the Seaquest. It^Òs all over, Lucas. You won. He unbuckles the strap and moves to follow her, glancing over at Merle 1 unconscious in the central cell as he does so. And then he gets it: he has just unbuckled the strap when Merle told him that anything that made him want to do that was unreal. And if Danner is Merle 1 why does he still look like Merle even though he^Òs unconscious? Lucas scoops up the stunner and fires at Merle 2 just as she reads his thoughts and turns back towards him. Merle 2 You^Òre wrong, Lucas... Merle 1 morphs into Danner and, for a split second, we think maybe Lucas _has_ made the wrong choice. But as soon as Merle 2 is unconscious ^ÓDanner^Ô morphs back into Merle and Merle 2 morphs back into Danner. Lucas is, emotionally, almost at the end of his tether now but he looks at them both for a moment and then picks up the stunner and figures out how to operate the bars on the central ^Ócell^Ô. He opens it up and drags the unconscious Merle out and the unconscious Danner in, and then re-sets the bars. And so he is standing, exhausted, gun in hand, over the unconscious body of Merle when the airlock door opens and Ford and Brody, in combat gear, guns ready, arrive. Brody Drop it! Lucas looks at them for a second, unable to believe they could be talking to him. Lucas Lieutenant! It^Òs me, Lucas! Ford Drop the gun, Lucas. Brody Now. He drops the gun. Brody Turn around. Put your hands on the wall. Lucas Commander- Ford Do it, now. Lucas assumes the position and Brody frisks him and handcuffs him, brusquely and unsympathetically. Meanwhile Ford checks Merle for vital signs. Ford She^Òs just stunned. Brody What about him? Ford tries to reach Danner but is defeated by the bars. He searches for the locking mechanism but can^Òt find one. The stunner has been confiscated but neither Ford nor Brody notices the locking trigger on the stock. Ford We leave him here, just like the Captain said. Get these two out of here. Brody carries Merle into their craft and then returns for Lucas: Ford has held his weapon pointed at Lucas the whole time. Lucas is at breaking point, with no idea why his friends are treating him like a criminal. He is taken onto Ford^Òs shuttle and secured there......... [Please keep the feedback coming in: it's been a great help. Apologies to all Brody fans for misspelling his name in the first five eps!!! And thanks to the person who belatedly pointed it out. The conclusion will follow over the next couple of days - still writing as fast as I can! This is fanfic only. John Danner and Merle are invented characters and no identification with anyone living or dead is intended. Blue Moon Part V Interior: Underwater facility. Day Lucas and Merle close the airlock behind them and run to explore the facility. There is a central chamber with a circular corridor around it. It is important to what follows that we understand Merle^Òs strategy is to lure Danner into the central chamber while she and Lucas remain outside of it in the corridor. There are two doors to the central chamber, directly opposite each other, and two airlock doors giving access from the curved outer corridor to the ocean, one of which is of course blocked by Merle and Lucas^Ò wrecked vehicle. Merle takes off the dowdy dress and underneath it we see she is wearing combat gear and has a harness wrapped around her hips and thighs on which were concealed various items. She takes off the concealed webbing and starts to slot some of the pieces of equipment together into a weapon, looking confident and competent. Merle Check the other airlock: and have we got any life pods? Lucas obeys. Lucas There^Òs one life pod: in working order. It could carry us both if we had to. No comms equipment though. Merle Don^Òt worry about that. Check out the sonar: where^Òs Danner? She is still assembling her equipment. As well as the weapon there is a syringe and the three phials of Blue Moon. She slips two of them into her pocket and puts one into the syringe. Lucas He^Òs coming in fast. Are you ready? Merle Nearly... Lucas He has to come in through there. Merle I know. Come over here, will you? She calls him over to a position directly opposite the airlock where Danner will have to arrive, slightly to the side of the life pod they will need to use to escape. She has unravelled her weapons harness and has it, a broad webbing strap, in her hands. Lucas What^Òs that? Merle I need to tie you up. Sorry. I can^Òt have you used as a weapon against me. Lucas Wait a minute... She takes no notice. She uses the strap to tie him to a stanchion in the wall, leaving his arms and hands free but looping the strap tightly around his chest. Merle You know I^Òm right. You called me up to lure me into a trap, remember? Now listen, you have to trust me, and you have to hold on to what^Òs real. Anything that makes you want to unbuckle that strap is unreal. Got it? Lucas (not meeting her eyes, sullenly) Got it. Merle (sharply) Lucas! Concentrate. You have to hold on to what^Òs real. This (pulling at the strap which binds him) is real. This (subliminal flash of Lucas tied to the bed back at Danner^Òs place) isn^Òt real. This (grasping his jaw) is real. This (subliminal flash of the imaginary gag) isn^Òt real. This (she leans over and kisses him gently on the lips) is real. This (subliminal flash of the two of them naked in a steamy embrace) isn^Òt. Got it? Lucas (still sullen) Got it Merle It _will_ be all right. Lucas (looking up at her, unconvinced) Yea? Merle leans over and kisses him again gently. There is a frisson between them but it is compromised by the fact that we all realise Merle simply needs to have Lucas under her control. Lucas isn^Òt stupid, he gets it too, but he also understands she is the best option he has at present, and manages a shy smile. Merle Yea. The second airlock starts to close by itself: Merle and Lucas react, realising that Danner is outside and about to break in. Merle moves away from Lucas and out of our vision - she has gone to hide. Lucas stands up straight and looks towards the airlock door. He sees Merle has gone and he is, to all intents and purposes, alone, tethered like a judas goat ready for Danner to find. He reaches down as if to untie himself but then remembers what Merle said about mistrusting anything that made him want to take off the strap. He decides to hold on to that thought. The airlock door opens and Danner comes in. He stays where he is in the entrance, looking cautiously around. He smirks at the sight of Lucas tethered to the wall but ignores him for the moment, looking for Merle. Danner Where^Òs your little friend, Lucas? She^Òs not your girlfriend at all, is she? She^Òs some kind of ... Navy Seal type. A macho military psychic killer bimbo... oh I^Òm going to make you pay for this, boy. She isn^Òt better than me. You^Òll see. I^Òm the best. Clay said. He is prowling around the outer corridor of the base cautiously, looking for Merle, sensing a trap but uncertain of its shape. Danner (using his telepathic powers on Lucas) Where is she? Lucas (involuntarily) I don^Òt know. She^Òs hiding. Danner Merle! Come on out! I^Òll blow his brains out! He has moved around the outer corridor of the base to where Lucas stands. He produces a gun and presses it to Lucas^Ò neck. Lucas puts his hands up and out, looking scared. Danner (thoughtfully) What^Òs her plan? What^Òs her plan, Lucas? (we see he is concentrating again - he is reading Lucas^Ò mind) The life pod? You^Òre going to float away together in the life pod? Well, what say you and me float away in the life pod together and leave the bitch here, huh? The life pod mechanism springs into life. Exterior. Fish farm. Day We see the life pod floating away from the dome. Interior. Fish farm. Day. Danner Oops! Well, no, looks like no-one^Òs going anywhere in the life pod. And your car is trashed - looks like the only way out of here is in my car. Shall we go? He moves to unbuckle the strap - and Merle appears as if from nowhere at the other side of the base, outside Danner^Òs vehicle. We see her face screwed up in concentration and a bolt of mental energy rips Danner^Òs gun from his hand. Danner (shocked but hiding it, to Merle) That^Òs the best you can do? (to Lucas) That^Òs the best you can do? Lucas sees Merle is fumbling for the syringe of Blue Moon. As she injects herself he tries to distract Danner. Lucas Like I said earlier, you lose. The Seaquest is on its way: let us go and it^Òll go easier with you. Danner Oh puh-lease! But then he feels Merle^Òs increased mental powers behind him and turns back to face her. There is a crack of mental energy as they each ^Ófire^Ô on the other. The two mental bolts meet spectacularly in the central chamber but there is no effect on either combatant. Merle raises her weapon and Danner^Òs mental energy bolt rips her gun from _her_ hand, too. Both weapons are now on the ground, more or less within Lucas^Ò reach. Danner turns back to Lucas and seizes a handful of his hair, pulling Lucas around as far as the strap will let him move so that Danner^Òs body is partly shielded from Merle by Lucas^Ò. Danner Give it up, girly, or I^Òll kill him and be done with it. Merle I didn^Òt think you were that stupid. He^Òs worth more alive than dead - look. (She shows the two remaining phials of Blue Moon) His friends gave me this much for nothing, just on the bare hope I could find him. Just think how much they^Òd trade you for the boy himself. Danner So give them to me and I^Òll let you have him. Merle I don^Òt want him: I^Òve got what I want. You. I^Òm a cop, Danner, and you^Òre under arrest. And this is where you^Òre going to have your trial and serve your sentence. What did you think I was going to do with you? Put you in jail? You^Òd walk past any guards, open any locks. So think of this as the start of your life sentence. Drones will drop off food supplies. The life support systems should outlast you. And no-one will come within range for you to influence mentally - Seaquest and the UEO will see to that. And I^Òll just tell the Seaquest that I wasn^Òt strong enough to stop you and their boy was already dead. She moves to their airlock - and Danner realises that of course she has access to his ship, the only way out of the facility, and that he can^Òt get to her and still hold on to Lucas. He leaves go of Lucas and rushes across the central chamber towards Merle who turns to fight him. We see the fight from Lucas^Ò point of view as the two grapple. Danner is stronger than Merle but Merle is more skilful and the pair of them move out of sight around the curve of the outer corridor, locked together. Then Merle reappears - fighting with Merle. Danner is messing with Lucas^Ò mind again, making himself look identical to Merle. The two Merles fight and Lucas watches, unsure what to do. Merle 1 Lucas! Get out of here! Now! Merle 2 No! Stay where you are! Merle 1 Lucas! Merle 2 Hold on to what^Òs real. They break apart, Merle 1 in the corridor on the far side of the central chamber, by the only remaining working airlock, and Merle 2 in the corridor on the near side, next to Lucas. Merle 2 picks up the real Merle^Òs gun and moves back behind the chamber door. Lucas can see her but Merle 1 can^Òt. But we see Merle 1 focus mentally and look at Merle 2^Òs position through Lucas^Ò eyes. Merle 1 steps forward into the central chamber to rush Merle 2 - and Merle 2 presses a remote control on the stock of her gun and green laser ^Óbars^Ô trap Merle 1 inside the central chamber......... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The seaQuest Fan Fiction Mailing List is a service provided by the Stgenesis.org domain. Sheffield Disclaimer: Seaquest and its characters are copyrighted and all copyrights and trademarks are acknowledged. This is fanfic only. John Danner is an invented character and no identification with anyone living or dead is intended. Teaser: Seaquest bridge: day There is the usual activity on the bridge. A young man we have not seen before _John Danner_ walks onto the bridge and over to Lucas. No-one takes any notice. He stands next to Lucas. Lucas looks up at him and then stands up, entirely focused on Danner. They walk off the bridge together. No-one else reacts at all, as if they were both invisible. They walk down the corridor past Dagwood. Dagwood sits down suddenly on the ground as if struck. Danner and Lucas walk off the Seaquest and across the docks, out of the UEO base altogether and walk towards a car. Danner opens the trunk and Lucas climbs in. Lucas looks up at Danner as if he wants to speak but for some reason can^Òt. Danner looks down at him, satisfied. Danner shuts Lucas inside the trunk, gets into the car, and drives off. Act One Laboratory. Day. Windowless room with computer equipment. Lucas sits in a chair in front of a computer terminal. Danner is walking around the room unable to settle. This is his finest hour and he needs someone to show off to, even if that someone is only Lucas whom he despises. Lucas Can I talk now? Danner But of course. If I don^Òt want you to do something, you^Òll know it. Lucas Who are you? What do you want? Danner My name is Danner. I was one of the people working with Clay Marshall, before you killed him. Lucas Marshall? The psychic? I didn^Òt- Lucas suddenly can^Òt breathe, can^Òt speak, can^Òt see. He falls to the ground, tipping over the chair, every muscle locked, suffocating. Danner Don^Òt ever speak to me about Marshall, Lucas. You killed him. He was a great man, and all he needed were the override codes that would give him the supply of synthium he needed. And you wouldn^Òt give them to him until it was too late and so he died. You deprived the world of a great man and I don^Òt EVER want to hear his name sullied by being spoken by your mouth. Do we understand each other? Lucas^Ò muscles unlock enough for him to drag in one shuddering breath Lucas I^Òm sorry. Danner Of course you are. He reaches over to Lucas and lifts him back up and watches for a long moment as the boy struggles to breathe. Then he gestures, withdrawing the mental compulsion he has used to starve Lucas of air. Lucas begins to breathe normally again. Danner There. Now you should get yourself comfortable while I explain what you^Òre going to do for me. Lucas is still breathing deeply, terrified by the sensation of being deprived of oxygen, but doesn^Òt risk angering this madman again by speaking. Danner The UEO has known for months that I need a supply of synthium to develop my powers any further. Unlike Clay, I^Òm not an addict, I can exist without synthium: but my powers will be immeasurably greater once I have access to Blue Moon. And the UEO have been holding that over me, just like they held it over Clay, as if we were dogs who would come to their heels when they called. Lucas But you obviously have enormous powers already. Have you talked with them, tried to work with them? I^Òm sure they^Òd help if you let them. Danner Power doesn^Òt want to be shared, it wants to be used. I^Òm not going to spend my life like a lab rat doing tests and running through mazes. And so we come to you, the boy wonder, who knows all the codes. The one who killed Clay by holding him back from what he needed. The one who is going to give me what you wouldn^Òt give to Clay. And here we are. Lucas You know I can^Òt do that. Danner just smiles again. Danner What I know - what we both know, Lucas - is that I can make you do anything I want. I can make anyone do anything: we just saw that on the SeaQuest, didn^Òt we? And what I want is for you to hack into the UEO secure transport system and divert the synthium that^Òs on its way to the Seaquest and bring it here. So let^Òs begin. Lucas swivels his chair to position himself at the computer screen and reaches out as if to log on but we see he is struggling against the impulse: Danner is trying to control him mentally and he is resisting. Danner This could be damaging. Lucas Funny. That^Òs exactly what Clay Marshall said too. Danner^Òs face darkens and Lucas is hit with wave upon wave of pain; sourceless, unendurable, pain. But Danner^Òs expression gradually changes from confidence to disbelief and, at last, he moves back and sits down, breathing heavily. For a moment they sit there, mirror images, like two fighters in their corners of the ring. Danner You^Òve obviously been preparing for this. I^Òm almost impressed. Lucas You have to understand that your mentor nearly killed me. Of course I looked up what research material there was about him and his powers. And how to resist them. Dr Smith taught me how to set up a block. Danner (contemptuously) So you plan to fight me? To resist? Dr Smith has taught you a few novice^Òs tricks and you want to take on a black belt? Listen to me, boy: by the time I^Òve finished breaking into your mental citadel there won^Òt be much left in there for you to protect. Do you want to have mush for brains, boy wonder? Lucas That^Òs up to me. Danner You^Òll learn how much pain a human being can stand, when there^Òs no merciful physical damage to put them out of their misery. It will go on, and on, and on; and if you make me angry enough it won^Òt ever stop, not even after I^Òve broken you down and you^Òve begged me to make use of anything you know. But, as you say, that^Òs your choice. Lucas No. All I have to do is hold on till the UEO finds us. Oh, you can kill me, sure - you^Òve already proved that. But if you kill me, you lose. If the UEO find us, you lose. And while I hold on to my block: you lose. You^Òd need synthium to break down another person^Òs mental block, according to all the research I^Òve read. And to get the synthium you need to break down my mental block. As I said before - you lose. Danner Maybe so, boy. Let^Òs see. * * * * * Seaquest. Bridger^Òs cabin. Night. Bridger is asleep. His video screen shows the same clip of Lucas over and over again. Lucas on screen ^ÓCaptain?^Ô ^ÓCaptain?^Ô ^ÓCaptain?^Ô Bridger wakes up at last, conscious that the same voice has been chiming away at the edges of his sleep for some moments. Bridger Bridger here Lucas on screen Captain, this is a recording. (beat) Oh wow this is going to be embarassing: if you^Òre hearing this message its because a dead man^Òs handle programme I set up has called you. Every six hours the programme checks if I^Òve logged on at the Seaquest and if I haven^Òt it looks for me. It^Òs calling you because I haven^Òt checked in at the Seaquest and the programme can^Òt find me in a morgue or a hospital or under arrest or shacked up in a hotel somewhere, or anywhere that needs a credit card or a security pass or a computer password to get to. So I guess what I^Òm saying is, if you^Òre hearing this message, it^Òs probably because I^Òm in some kind of trouble and I^Òd kind of like you to rescue me. Bridger How are you coming along? O^ÒNeill It^Òs hard to follow captain - Lucas is good at this. But you were right; as far as I can tell the message you got wasn^Òt the only one he sent. The virus programme sent out three, maybe four, messages that night. Bridger And have you managed to trace any of them? O^ÒNeill Like I said Captain, Lucas is good at this. I can trace them as far as the satellite uplink but after that they bounce around and cover their own tracks. Bridger Well do what you can. Commander, what about the man who took him? Ford I can^Òt find a record of him anywhere. It^Òs like he^Òs a ghost. Bridger Keep on it. I suppose there^Òs still nothing on Lucas himself? Henderson I^Òm watching every frequency but wherever he is he isn^Òt communicating. Or can^Òt communicate. Bridger We^Òll find him. Try not to worry. How are Dr Smith and her team doing? Ford Everyone who wants the treatment has had it. O^ÒNeill Captain, I^Òm getting a signal from shore. Someone is asking for permission to come aboard. (He listens) Captain, she says she^Òs Lucas^Ò girlfriend. Bridger Lucas^Ò girlfriend? What else have we all forgotten? Commander, ask Dr Smith and her team to meet me in my cabin. And Lieutenant Brodie. Bring her to us. Seaquest: Bridger^Òs cabin. Day. Smith, Piccolo and Darwin wait there. Bridger and Ford arrive just before Brodie ushers in the young woman, Merle. She is in her mid to late twenties, wearing a dowdy long dress and looks, although attractive, rather mousey and dull. Merle immediately locks eyes with Smith. Smith is receiving something from her telepathically. Smith smiles, and then looks to Piccolo and Dagwood for reassurance. Piccolo (laughing at the telepathic message) Way to go Luke! Dagwood (also pleased with what he receives) You will help Lucas? Merle I^Òll help him, Dagwood, don^Òt worry. But I^Òll need help too. Bridger What is going on here? Smith Captain, Merle was just reminding me that the person we^Òre dealing with is a very powerful telepath and we should be careful how we share information. Bridger And you are?... Merle (unblushingly) Lucas^Ò girlfriend. And a telepath too. Ford This is a set up, captain, it has to be. Bridger We don^Òt know that, Commander. Dr Smith, what can you tell me. Smith I won^Òt lie to you, Nathan - you know that. Bridger But you aren^Òt going to tell me all of the truth. Smith (carefully) This is Merle. She is Lucas^Ò friend. Lucas called her a few moments ago and asked her to meet him. We - she and I - think it^Òs a trap, but she^Òs willing to go ahead and spring it. Bridger And what do you need? Merle Don^Òt follow me. If you have a micro tracker I can swallow then you can trace me, but don^Òt move in. If the person holding Lucas is who I think it is, you can^Òt handle him. Bridger And you can? Merle If I have some Blue Moon. That^Òs why I^Òm here. That^Òs what I need from you. Brodie No captain! This is all turned around. If you^Òre right about this guy Lucas he^Òs most likely being held by someone who^Òs after a supply of Blue Moon. This is the scam, right here - someone none of you remembers, walks in here and asks you to hand over the very thing this is about! Ford I have to agree, Captain. This sounds like a double bluff. Bridger I hear what you^Òre saying, Lieutenant, Commander, but if this were a scam, wouldn^Òt we all be convinced we knew this woman, that she was Lucas^Ò girlfriend, that we could trust her? I _know_ I^Òve never seen this woman before in my life, and I^Òve never heard Lucas mention her name. And she^Òs a psychic too. (beat) Dagwood - what do you think I should do? Dagwood She will help Lucas. We should help her. Bridger You see? How much synthium are we talking about? Merle Three doses: ten grammes each. Smith Three? Three is too much. You^Òll be addicted. Merle Worry about that when I come back. If I come back. Piccolo With Lucas. Merle I said I^Òll get him, and I will. If it can be done. Dagwood You can do it. Dagwood knows. Merle Well? I don^Òt have much time. Lucas asked me to meet him in an hour and it^Òs nearly up. Bridger How much damage could that much synthium do? Ford If you had the detonators - you could blow up maybe three city blocks. Smith Or you could boost telepathic abilities enough to move mountains. Merle, don^Òt take so much. Please. Merle Which would be worse - I come back with Lucas and then have to break a synthium addiction, or we don^Òt come back at all? Bridger All right - Lieutenant Brodie, please go down to the missile bay and bring back three phials of synthium, ten grammes each. Brodie Aye sir: but can I ask, why me? Bridger You said it Lieutenant. You^Òre our control mechanism. That much: and no more. If this is all some trick I want to know there^Òs a limit to the damage we^Òve caused. And get me that micro tracker too. If I don^Òt like where you^Òre going, young lady, we^Òll come after you ourselves. Interior: Seaquest missile bay: day Brodie comes in and fills three phials with the blue liquid synthium which he draws from a missile warhead. He then looks around and produces a grainy security camera photograph of Merle and writes on it ^ÓBeware psychic: 3 synthium x 10 grammes^Ô He folds the photograph up and puts it into an inner pocket of his uniform. Exterior: Car park: Day. Merle is seen getting out of a vehicle. She looks apprehensive. Merle Lucas? Danner steps out from behind a parked car. He takes her by the arm. She does not resist as he leads her to his car. Interior: Danner^Òs hideout: day Lucas is lying on the bunk, bound and gagged. Danner ushers in Merle, holding her by the upper arm, standing slightly behind her. Danner See who we have here, Lucas. Your little friend has come to join the party. Lucas shakes his head and makes protesting noises through the gag. Danner Do you want to see her suffer, Lucas? Because she will, won^Òt you, sweetie? Merle looks stunned or drugged. Lucas is still writhing and making protesting noises. Danner So you can open up your block, or you can watch me tear your little friend to pieces. ... and then Merle comes to life. With no warning, her elbow smashes back into Danner^Òs face and he goes down, stunned. She kicks him, expertly, and then hauls Lucas to his feet. Merle Come on! She turns to run. Lucas looks at her, with a look which says ^Ówhy isn^Òt this mad woman going to untie me?^Ô, but following her is still a better bet than staying and waiting for Danner to wake up. He runs, awkwardly with his hands bound, down the corridor after Merle. Exterior: pier. Day. Merle and Lucas run out of a building, Lucas still bound and gagged. Merle breaks into an amphibian vehicle standing there and opens the passenger door for Lucas. Merle (impatiently) Get in! She barely waits for him to get inside before she starts it moving and drives it straight into the sea. She is concentrating fiercely on getting them away from Danner but, after a minute, she has time to notice that Lucas is looking at her to untie him. Merle I can^Òt untie you, kid; it^Òs a mind game - you aren^Òt tied up in the first place. He looks at her disbelievingly. She sets a course on the autopilot. Then takes him by the jaw, one handed. We see him from her point of view and she^Òs right, he isn^Òt gagged. Merle Talk to me! Lucas (reflexively) Ow! (then, realising she is right) Oh! (He brings his hands out from behind his back and looks at his wrists for a moment, disbelievingly) I guess you were right. Er...Lucas Wolenczak. Thanks for... well, thanks. Merle This isn^Òt over yet, kid. See that blip on the scan? That^Òs got to be Danner, right behind us. Lucas Don^Òt you have some kind of back up? Merle Brilliant! ^ÓHello officer, thanks for coming. Why, officer, what are you doing pointing that gun at us? What, officer? Put on these handcuffs and march right on back to Danner? Glad to, officer.^Ô I thought you were supposed to be smart? Just believe that I know what I^Òm doing but, no, I^Òm not going to explain it to you because Danner will just pluck it right out of your head again when he catches up with us. Lucas He^Òs going to catch up? Merle All part of the plan, kid. Lucas Just so there _is_ a plan. And it^Òs Lucas. She turns to look at him, realising it won^Òt help her to have him hostile, and that he^Òs terrified of falling back into Danner^Òs hands. Merle Lucas - I^Òm sorry. But your call didn^Òt give me much time to prepare. And Danner^Òs good at what he does. But I^Òll get you through this. You know I will. That^Òs why you picked me. Trust your own judgement, even if you don^Òt quite trust me yet. Lucas Can I at least ask where we^Òre going? Merle We^Òre on course for the Seaquest but I don^Òt think we^Òre going to make it. There^Òs a fish farm outstation on a line between us and them - just a couple of airlocks, a computer centre and some life support - and if we have to we can take shelter there. There is an ominous clanking noise. Lucas What^Òs that? Merle Danner. He^Òs good. I can^Òt move solid objects at anything like his range. I think he just mangled our propulsion system. We^Òre going down. Lucas starts to come out of shock and begins to work furiously at the control panel, trying to bypass the failed system. Merle is concentrating on the steering, both working flat out against the inevitable Lucas We aren^Òt going to make it. Merle Hold on! They brace themselves as their vehicle crashes against the airlock of the underwater installation. Water starts to leak in. They pound on the hatch and after a few desperate seconds of struggle they escape from the vehicle into the facility. The vehicle fills up with water behind them as they struggle to close the airlock doors: it is clear no-one will escape from the facility in that vehicle.......... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The seaQuest Fan Fiction Mailing List is a service provided by the Stgenesis.org domain.
