The computers were off and the screensavers, too, In hopes of some rest for the overworked crew. They all had been working so long and so hard, And down in Luke's quarters were now playing cards. Thankful they were, for this sudden vacation, It was, altogether, a too-rare occasion. When down in the bay, there arose such a din, That as Lucas shot up, the lad banged his shin. "Hey guys, wait for me!" he yelled after the others, Who'd all taken off, one after another. He looked at the vidlink, and saw to his shock, A miniature shuttle, almost ready to dock. ID was transmitted, intentions made clear, And from the crew rose a heartwarming cheer. Lit up like novas were Lucas' eyes, Mirrored in those of the rest of the guys. He rushed to throw his arms 'round the new arrival "Captain Bridger!" he shouted, his joy without rival. "We've missed you so much!" the blonde ensign said, "Hugging back quickly, Bridger nodded his head. "I've missed you all, too," he told them all fast, "But now that I'm here, we can all have a blast." He walked toward the bridge with a hearty "Let's go!" Eager for adventure, the crew started to follow. "Come Lucas," he said. "Come Tim and come Tony," "Come Dagwood -- hey, where's Jon? And where the heck's Lonnie?" The crew started talking of incredible feats, When they were met by a Scrooge, fiercely gnashing his teeth. "Just what do you think you're doing, disrupting my crew? Don't you know they have orders, duties to do?" Nathan grinned, exclaiming, "Oh, lighten up, Ollie, It's Christmas Eve, and I'm throwing a party!" "No, you're not," Hudson growled, a snarl caught in his throat, "Now on my watch, civilian, and not on my boat!" A hush befell the crew, you could hear a pin drop, But Bridger walked on, refusing to stop. "Eat your heart out," he cried, grinning over his shoulder "But McGath okayed this one. In fact, it's an order." Grinning, he produced the order, with the UEO seal, And the crew burst into applause, filled with zest and with zeal. McGath's Christmas spirit had saved the day, Giving all the day off, a vacation with pay! In books they still speak of McGath with cheer, His orders accomp'nied by non-alcoholic beer -- And while Tony played piano, Dagwood strung lights, And everyone laughed, and danced through the night. Tim made decorations, and wouldn't you know, Jon and Lonnie made use of the hung mistletoe. Even Hudson and Kimura couldn't keep up their gloom, Soon these two were seen spinning 'round the room. 'Twas the best Christmas ever (in this decade, at least) With a humongous, delicious, mouth-watering feast. At the end of the night, Bridger called for a toast, He toasted the crew, and McGath, and his host. "Let's give thanks for our friends," he said 'mid whistles and cracks, "For those who are here, for those who didn't come back. Let's hope we're as brave, let's hope we're as strong. And when facing our enemies, we never go wrong. "It's Christmas '32, and the future looks bleak. As once-Captain of the seaQuest, I know of which I speak. Macronesia, Deon, the Choadai and others Make me want to sleep, and hope when I wake up it's over. But enough of our troubles, let's forget all our woe, Let's be happy tonight, and win the war tomorrow. Let's celebrate now, with so many friends near -- And by God, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!" *** ****************************************************** Hercules: "You're insane."
