The same goes for Lucas. 2 - I made a few assumptions in this story because the third season never brought them up. If there is any incorrect Naval terminology, etc. I apologize profusely. Let me know what I did wrong so I can correct it in the future. ;) And next, the thank yous: Erica and Chris - Thank you for reading over OW and noticing all the little things I skipped!! Sherry - Thank you, thank you, thank you. You analyzed the story to the bone and really pulled it forward. :) My readers - Thank you for taking the time to read this story. As for feedback, thank you even more. Any sort of response, whether positive or constructive, is appreciated and helps me build as a writer. (That said...you can contact me at UEO Krieg@aol.com) And now I present to you Officer Wolenczak, a short scene addition that takes place as "Brave New World" ends. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Officer Wolenczak L.E. Beglin Lucas Wolenczak walked out of Captain Hudson's quarters, feeling a strange mixture of excitement and disbelief. After getting a few steps away, what he had just done finally hit him. He had just signed away four years of his life to be in the UEO Navy. Lucas walked into the quarters he and Tony Piccolo shared and flopped down on the bottom bunk. "Finally decided you're sick of the top bunk?" Lucas pushed back his hair and sat up, glancing as Tony closed the door behind him. "I'm an officer." Tony snorted and sat in the desk chair. "Sure." Lucas sighed. "Hudson told me I had to enlist or get shipped off seaQuest." Tony was quiet for a moment. "Since when do you enlist and become an officer?" Lucas glanced at his watch. "Since fifteen minutes ago." "And Hudson just gave you a commission to ensign?" Lucas sat up and shrugged. "Yea. I was thinking more along the lines of Lieutenant but..." "Lieutenant? Yea right." Lucas glared at Piccolo. "I've been on this boat for two tours--" "Neither of which were completed before some sort of disaster happened." "Yea, but I've been through a lot." "As a civilian." Lucas snorted. "Tony, in the heat of the moment, it doesn't matter who you are or what rank you are." "Luke, I truly doubt Captain Hudson wouldn't mind if you accidentally called him Oliver in the heat of battle," Tony shook his head. "Trust me, Luke, this is going to be one hell of a wake up call for you." "Ensign Wolenczak." Captain Oliver Hudson examined the younger man. Part of him felt a twinge of regret at making the young man enlist. Maybe it was because Hudson knew he hadn't just signed the kid up for four years. Twenty was more like it. In all his years in the UEO, Hudson had found that somehow most officers never seemed ready to leave when the four years were up. And the next thing they knew, they were fifty and wondering what had happened to their lives. But that was only part of him. Hudson had always found it ridiculous that a civilian had been on _seaQuest_. And not just any civilian. A sixteen year old civilian, along with the dolphin. Even though the basis of the Navy was changing, there were some things that shouldn't change. Civilians on military vessels was one of them. Having pets was another one, though it was one Hudson wouldn't argue right now. "Sir, you wanted to see me?" Hudson nodded slowly. "Yes, Ensign. Your papers came through this morning. Congratulations." "Thank you, Captain." Hudson stood and handed Wolenczak the papers. "Your new room assignment is also listed." Lucas was taken aback. "My new what?" "Room assignment." Noting the young man's expression, Hudson expanded, "As an officer you get your own quarters." Lucas nodded slowly, realizing he couldn't exactly argue over this. "What about Piccolo?" "He'll be reassigned as well." Lucas looked at Hudson for a moment. "But...the room?" "It will be converted into a room solely for your use." Lucas kept back a smile. "Like an office?" "More or less." Hudson walked in front of his desk. "Your computer equipment will be kept there, as well as some basic research tools." "Thank you, Sir." Hudson merely nodded. "Try and have all your personal belongings into your quarters by tomorrow. You begin your duty shift tomorrow during the morning shift." Lucas nodded. "Captain, if I may ask...what about a uniform?" "There's already one in your new quarters." "Ah...thank you, Sir." "Anything else?" "Not at all, Captain." "If you have any further questions, talk to the Commander. Dismissed." Hudson gave Wolenczak a loose salute, which the young man returned before exiting. Hudson shook his head as Wolenczak left. It was going to be an interesting few months. Lucas looked around his new quarters. He had spent all of yesterday moving his belongings into this new room and then unpacking. In a way, his new quarters looked even more sparse than the old ones. But they also looked much more mature, much more like the quarters of an adult instead of a kid. He glanced into the mirror. A young man looked back at him with slightly unruly blonde hair and a serious impression. He wore the navy blue jumper of a UEO officer. Lucas gave himself a small smile. He looked good in a uniform. Who knew? Maybe he'd finally manage to get a girlfriend. Lucas walked slowly onto the bridge. Somehow, it felt different. It was hard to describe. Maybe it was the change of command, maybe it was the outfit, maybe it was the time change...whatever it was, it filled Lucas with a feeling he had never felt before. "Omega shift dismissed." Lucas glanced at Lieutenant Lonnie Henderson, who had just finished the night watch. She looked slightly tired, but gave Lucas a smile. "You look good in the uniform...Ensign," Henderson said. Lucas tried to keep the blush back. "Thanks." Henderson merely nodded. "Get to your station and I'll see you later." Lucas nodded and walked up to his station. What had been Ortiz's station. No, now was not the time to think about that. A moment later, Ford and Hudson entered together, deep in conversation. They nodded briefly to Henderson as she exited the bridge to wait for the MagLev. Ford looked up and gave Lucas a smile of approval. Brody and O'Neill were the next two to enter. They gave Lucas long looks, unaccustomed to seeing the boy in uniform. But, as everyone else had, they gave Lucas a congratulatory smile. Slowly, all of the members of the shift entered, each giving Lucas a look. But it was the look Hudson gave him at the end of the shift that cast a permanent imprint in the young man's mind. As Lucas was standing to leave, Hudson caught his eye, giving the boy a small smile and nod. Somehow, it meant more than any of the smiles he had received that day. He never could say why...but part of him always knew it was because even then, he had admired Hudson and been all too eager to impress the man.
