The door opens and a pair of boots step out. The camera remains on the boots and legs of Ben Krieg as he walks through the corridor. The shot changes to one of a door. Krieg pushes it open, and the shot shifts to a profile of Wade Mallory, a mercenary. KRIEG (impatiently) You said you had an offer I couldn't refuse. MALLORY (half-amused) Still as subtle as ever, I see? KRIEG Cut the crap, Mallory. I've got better things to waste my time with. Mallory appears amused. MALLORY That's not what I heard. In fact, since that iceberg incident, you've been keeping a low profile. KRIEG Your point? MALLORY I've been authorized to speak on behalf of someone who has a job for you. KRIEG (dismissing) Fine. Whatever. What's the job, and how much is it worth to me? MALLORY Six figures. Krieg reacts. Mallory withdraws a handheld computer (like a SEAPOC) and passes it across the table. Krieg takes it cautiously, studies the screen for several moments, and passes it back. KRIEG (shakes his head) Forget it. I'm not gonna do that. Mallory shrugs. MALLORY If that's the way you feel... KRIEG I won't go up against _seaQuest_. I have friends aboard her. Mallory appears unfazed. MALLORY That's what you think. Krieg bristles. KRIEG Is there a point to this? MALLORY Just this: If I were you, I wouldn't walk out that door. Krieg stands, violently shoving the chair into the table. He takes a step back. A shadow moves away from the doorframe, towards him. He doesn't notice. KRIEG (unconcerned) Thanks for the warning. (beat) Excuse me if I ignore it. MALLORY (shrugging) Suit yourself. Krieg walks toward the door, but is intercepted by Mason Freeman, who is armed with a syringe. He promptly, after a brief struggle, manages to inject the fluid in the syringe into Krieg's arm. He shoves Krieg back into the chair. Krieg rubs his arm while glaring at Mallory. KRIEG (furious, but also mildly frightened) What-- MALLORY Consider it...an incentive. Krieg is confused by this, still angry, but more scared. He makes a futile attempt to hide his fear from Mallory and Freeman by looking "tough". KRIEG What was it? MALLORY A strychnine derivative bonded to a delaying agent. If you don't get regular doses of the antidote, you'll suffer stomach pain, heightened sensory awareness, and, if you go too long without treatment, convulsions. Eventually... (grins malevolently) You'll die. Krieg is shocked. KRIEG (angrily) Like hell. Mallory shrugs. MALLORY You have five hours until the onset of symptoms. I'll accept your final decision then. CUT TO BRIDGE Lucas and O'Neill are at their stations. Ford is in command. Hudson enters and walks towards O'Neill, puts his hand on O'Neill's shoulder. HUDSON Mr. O'Neill, activate internal speakers. (to Helm) Set course to Tahiti. O'Neill does so, Hudson walks towards chair. Ford gets up, Hudson sits down. HUDSON Attention, this is the captain. We are currently en route to Tahiti. Shore leave will be granted to the crew. There is a positive reaction to this from the crew. Someone comes by to relieve Lucas of duty. He begins collecting his "things", taking off headset, etc. Hudson nods to O'Neill, who turns off the speakers. Lucas stands. HUDSON (not looking at Lucas) Ensign Wolenczak, hold it. Lucas stops near door. Hudson moves towards O'Neill. HUDSON (to O'Neill) Lieutenant, your services as translator have been "requested" by the UEO. (to Ford) Commander Ford, either yours or Lieutenant Fredricks' attendance will be required. (beat, with humor) The two of you can fight it out on your own. Ford nods and leaves. Hudson walks to Lucas. They leave the bridge. CUT TO CORRISOR As Lucas and Hudson enter. HUDSON How would you like to have temporary command of the _seaQuest_? Beat, Lucas is a bit shocked. LUCAS (somewhat overwhelmed) Command? Of the _seaQuest_?!? Hudson gives him a "duh, the _seaQuest_", kind of look. LUCAS Uh...sure. HUDSON (wryly) Please, Ensign, restrain your enthusiasm. Unless...you don't want her. LUCAS (overwhelmed) No! I mean-- Yeah! Sure! I'd be honored! HUDSON Good. Have fun. You'll take command once we dock in Tahiti. Hudson turns to go, Lucas balks. LUCAS _What_?!? Hudson stops. HUDSON Consider it a training exercise. Yourself and four other inexperienced officers of your choosing keeping an eye on the _seaQuest_ while the crew takes leave. Lucas just stares. HUDSON (dryly) Oh-- and no wild parties while we're away. He leaves, satisfied grin on his face, Lucas' jaw drops, a "why me" expression on his face. EXT. SEAQUEST Esetablishing shot: _seaQuest_ is docked at Tahiti. Caption reads: one day later. CUT TO BRIDGE Lucas is "collecting" his officers. Piccolo, CPOs Erica South and Janice Kroese, and Seaman Al Jarvis, who is missing. Kroese is at communications. South is at helm. Kroese has her headset on, listening to music. Lucas, oblivious to this, looks around the bridge and checks his watch. He looks at Piccolo, who besides handling tactical is also acting as XO. LUCAS (to bridge in general) Where's Jarvis? Hudson's gonna check in with us in five minutes! If he thinks I don't have control of the situation, he'll kill me! Piccolo shrugs. PICCOLO (kidding) Does that mean I'll get command? Lucas exhales sharply, whirls and flops into the command chair. Jarvis runs onto the bridge, out of breath. He is grinning, unconcerned with his tardiness. JARVIS So-- did I miss anything? Lucas appears about ready to haul off at him, but realizes that there isn't time. He gestures to the engineering console. LUCAS Just-- Take engineering! Jarvis acts semi-offended, Piccolo looks on almost fearfully as Jarvis touches the console. JARVIS (quietly) Sheesh! Almost as soon as he takes the station, an alarm starts beeping. Lucas dashes to the station. LUCAS What happened, Jarvis? JARVIS (somewhat flustered) I--I dunno! (throws up hands helplessly) Something with the sensors! After a moment of silence, broken only by the beeping-- which is getting louder by the second-- Lucas taps a short series of keys. The beeping ceases. LUCAS (annoyed) Jarvis, you've gotta to make sure that the WSKRS _don't collide_. Jarvis grins and slaps Lucas on the back. JARVIS I _knew_ there was some reason we kept you around. Lucas stares at him for a moment, barely able to contain his anger, fury, etc. Finally, however, he moves back to the command chair and slumps into it. Piccolo glances over his shoulder, grinning. PICCOLO (teasingly, to Jarvis and Lucas) Nah. We keep 'im 'round 'cause he's so darned cute. Lucas flushes. The weather is nice, (i.e.- sun shining, light breeze, warm-- but not overly so) They stop in front of the building, at a security checkpoint. Jill Merriweather, their translator, is there to meet them. ESCORT Captain Hudson, Lieutenant Fredricks, this is Lieutenant Jillian Merriweather. She'll be your translator. Merriweather grins. She is a blunt, friendly, southern- bellish type, with a _thick_ Southern drawl. She extends a hand to Hudson, who accepts it. MERRIWEATHER (as they shake) Hi. Y'all can just call me Jill. Hudson's polite smile drops off his face. ESCORT Now, if you'll excuse us, I have orders to take Lieutenant O'Neill directly to the Spanish delegation. Hudson nods. The escort and O'Neill walk away. MERRIWEATHER If y'all would come with me, I'll show y'all `round the place. Hudson and Fredricks roll their eyes at each other as Merriweather turns and they follow her inside the building. CUT TO CONFERENCE BUILDING Several hours later. Hudson, Fredricks, and Merriweather are having "tour". O'Neill and the Spanish delegation-- Marina Sanchez and two male aides, are walking by. Hudson and Fredricks quickly excuse themselves, and move toward them. HUDSON Lieutenant! O'Neill stops and turns. O'NEILL Captain, Lieutenant. (beat) Is there something I can do for you? FREDRICKS (hushed) We're trying to get away from our translator. O'NEILL (nodding) I see. Sanchez clears her throat. O'NEILL (continuing, to Hudson) Captain, these are dona Marina Sanchez, and her aides, Juan Martinez and Victor Leal. (to Sanchez, etc.) Este es Oliver Hudson, el capitan de _La Busca del Mar_. Esta es J.J. Fredricks, su pilota. Sanchez moves closer to Hudson, displaying obvious interest in him. As Sanchez speaks, O'Neill keeps up a running translation. SANCHEZ Hola, Senor Capitan. O'NEILL She says hello. SANCHEZ (continuing) Sabe que, teniera un interes en el mar... O'NEILL (echoing) She says she's very interested in the sea... SANCHEZ (continuing) Creo que es muy misterioso... O'NEILL (echoing) She thinks it's very mysterious... SANCHEZ (smiling, continuing) Y tambien creo que tenieras piernas lindas. O'NEILL (echoing, not realizing) And she thinks you have nice legs. (beat, all react, especially O'Neill) Sir, I-- HUDSON (somewhat stiffly) It's alright, Lieutenant. Merriweather walks up to them and puts her hands on Hudson's and Fredricks' shoulders, to their obvious dismay. MERRIWEATHER Hey y'all, I'd thought I lost ya! (seeing the Spaniards) Oh...Hola. O'NEILL (still flustered) Hello. (to Hudson) Uh, Captain, if you'll excuse us... Hudson waves O'Neill off. He and the Spaniards leave, Sanchez giving Hudson one last lingering look. Fredricks tries to hide a grin, and fails. MERRIWEATHER (seeing the grin) What's so funny? CUT TO MALLORY'S SHIP Mallory is talking to Deon via audio/visual link. Deon isn't visible at first. The camera slowly swings from view of Mallory to view of the screen. DEON Is he dead yet? MALLORY Mr. Deon, it hasn't even been two days! Deon sighs and rolls his eyes. DEON This is an excuse?! (beat) I don't pay you to give me excuses, Mallory. What's taking so long. MALLORY (weakly) He's...cooperating. DEON (pure acid) Well, isn't that a lovely surprise. (beat) You know what he did. I don't think I need to remind you again. (beat) And I want him _dead_. (beat) _Now_. MALLORY (trying to provide additional platitudes) Now, later, what does it matter? DEON It matters. (beat) This conference _has_ to be stopped. If it isn't, the UEO will slap me with literally thousands of code violations-- I'd be _bankrupt_... (beat) Even if they somehow manage to pull this off, I don't want Krieg getting out of that building alive... (beat) You'd better see to it he _doesn't_. CUT TO SEAQUEST DOCKING PORT Hudson and Fredricks are headed back to _seaQuest_ for the night. Merriweather has finally left them alone. HUDSON That was one of the most exhausting days I've had since-- O'Neill jogs up from behind them. O'NEILL Captain! Hudson turns. HUDSON Mr. O'Neill? O'NEILL Sir, I have a message for you. From dona Sanchez. She requests your attendance at a small gathering she's having tonight. Hudson looks befuddled. HUDSON Excuse me? O'NEILL (shrugs) She's having a dinner, and wanted you to be there. Hudson looks to Fredricks, who seems to be enjoying watching him search for an answer. HUDSON (not "getting" it) I'd be honored. O'Neill and Fredricks exchange knowing glances, then O'Neill goes. Hudson turns to Fredricks. She is attempting to hide a grin. HUDSON What? FREDRICKS Oh...nothing. HUDSON (mock warning) Janet... FREDRICKS This is only my personal opinion, sir, but she just asked you out. Hudson looks shocked and somewhat horrified. Fredricks just laughs. CUT TO DINING ROOM Hudson, Sanchez, and O'Neill are sitting at a dinner table, there is no food on the table. O'Neill keeps up a running translation of everything that either person says. SANCHEZ La cena llegara' pronta, Capitan. O'NEILL She says that dinner will come soon, sir. Hudson nods. SANCHEZ (continuing) Dime sus aventuras, Capitan. Se' que son muy interesantes. O'NEILL (echoing) She wants you to tell her some of your adventures, sir. Hudson looks surprised at first, then shrugs. HUDSON (reluctantly) I suppose it'll pass the time. (thinks a moment) Well, there was one time... As O'Neill opens his mouth to translate, the door bursts open, and Freeman and Krieg appear. O'NEILL (incredulous) Ben? Freeman? Krieg brandishes gun in O'Neill's general direction. KRIEG Shut up, O'Neill. SANCHEZ (to O'Neill) Que pasa?!? FREEMAN (to O'Neill) Tell her to be quiet, or... He trails off, and points his gun at her. SANCHEZ (angrily) Que pasa! Esta es una conferencia cientifica! No tienen razzon matarnos! KRIEG (confused) What the hell is she saying? FREEMAN (to O'Neill) Tell her to shut up. (to all) All of you, against the wall. HUDSON This is a scientific conference. What the hell do you think you're doing? FREEMAN That's not your concern. HUDSON You're packing weapons, Freeman. That _makes_ it my concern. KRIEG (with a nervous glance at Freeman) He's not gonna shoot anyone FREEMAN (stepping in, darkly) Unless someone wants to give me a reason. (points gun at each in turn) _Any_ reason. Hudson, O'Neill and Sanchez exchange worried glances. CUT TO BRIDGE Fredricks rushes on. FREDRICKS (to Kroese) Get me a channel to McGath! Kroese looks a little surprised, but complies. LUCAS (to Fredricks) What's going on? She ignores him as McGath's aide appears on the screen. AIDE Can I-- FREDRICKS Put McGath on. _Now_. AIDE (objecting) He's a very busy-- FREDRICKS (furious) This is an _absolute emergency_! The aide eyes her rank insignia. AIDE (reluctantly) Just a moment, Lieutenant. LUCAS (to Fredricks) Lieutenant-- FREDRICKS (to Piccolo) Get the Stinger ready for launch. PICCOLO Huh? FREDRICKS Just _do_ it. Lucas and Piccolo exchange glances. McGath appears on screen. Piccolo leaves when Fredricks shoots him a _look_. FREDRICKS Secretary, the conference has been taken hostage. MCGATH (shocked) What? FREDRICKS A couple of mercenaries forced their way past security and into the Spanish Delegation's quarters-- and have taken Captain Hudson, Lieutenant O'Neill, and one of the scientists hostage. MCGATH What? FREDRICKS At the moment, I'm the ranking officer, and-- MCGATH Who was given the conn? FREDRICKS Ensign Wolenczak. MCGATH (to himself) Damn. (to Fredricks) Where's Commander Ford? FREDRICKS Moorea. With Lieutenant Henderson. Eyebrows go up around the bridge. MCGATH (unfazed) Put me through to them-- FREDRICKS I can't, sir. They don't have comm equipment. KROESE (through her) Lieutenant, we're being hailed. FREDRICKS (to McGath) Sir, hold please. She nods to Kroese and the image on the screen changes to Krieg. Lucas stands, too shocked to speak. KRIEG ("tough guy") We're picking up an outgoing transmission from your ship. Stop it now, or somebody over here dies. LUCAS (in shock) What are you-- FREDRICKS (to Lucas) Ensign, you're outta line. (to Krieg) The UEO doesn't negotiate with terrorists. KRIEG Ain't that a shame. Then I guess you won't be seeing too much of your friends over here. (beat) Now, no ships in or out. And we're listening in on all of your communications, so don't try anything. One of my associates is suffering an acute case of itchy trigger finger. Get my point? (beat) I know UEO policy. You can't come near me as long as it'd put them in danger. And believe me, they _are_ in danger. (beat) So just follow my orders, and everything should be fine. He cuts the channel, and it reverts to McGath. FREDRICKS They're listening, sir. (beat) I'm sending Ensign Wolenczak to Moorea in the Stinger to get ahold of Commander Ford. It should be small enough to escape detection by their sensors. MCGATH Didn't you just say that Wolenczak was in command? FREDRICKS (blank) Yes. MCGATH Then you're the one who'll have to go. Fredricks is blank. FREDRICKS Sir? MCGATH Section 42, Article 11, Paragraph 22. Once placed in command, an officer cannot be relieved except by the officer who placed him there, unless the officer in question is judged incompetent by a certified professional. Fredricks blanches. FREDRICKS You mean unless he's medically unfit for duty - MCGATH (cutting in) He's stuck. Lucas steps forward, getting the idea. LUCAS You mean, _I'm_ in command? Me? MCGATH (sighing) For the duration. Lucas is overwhelmed by this, and thus acts irresponsibly. LUCAS Whoa. McGath and Fredricks exchange glances: Great, an emergency, and a _teenager_'s got command of the ship. Just what they don't need. Lucas doesn't notice this. FREDRICKS Fine. I'll get back to you, sir. She cuts the channel. She is annoyed and a bit put off by McGath's news. FREDRICKS (to Lucas, as she leaves) Don't screw up, kid. FADE TO COMMERCIAL END ACT ONE ========================================================================== TO BE CONTINUED.... Copyright 1996 Rachel Brody & Melissa Beattie =========================== PART 2 ===================================== See teaser for all disclaimers. ACT TWO FADE IN TO EXT. OF SEAQUEST A spectre is seen leaving the ship. CUT TO SEAQUEST BRIDGE All are at appropriate stations, monitoring the spectre's progress. Lucas had "settled down" PICCOLO Okay, she's out. LUCAS (nodding, speaking to Kroese) Good. Contact McGath. Tell him that Lieutenant Fredricks has left for Moorea. Kroese nods. LUCAS (to Piccolo) Do you think they've noticed? Piccolo shrugs. KROESE Ensign, I'm receiving a hail from Krieg. LUCAS (to self) Guess so. (steeling himself) Put him on. Krieg appears on-screen, his image blocking out the rest of the room. KRIEG (angrily) What do you think you're doing? LUCAS (trying to stay calm) Sending someone to contact Commander Ford and Lieutenant Henderson. They needed to be told, and since they don't have comm equipment, I-- KRIEG (cutting him off) I _said_ no ships in or out. Don't play games with me, kid. Freeman is heard in the background. FREEMAN Krieg-- KRIEG (turning slightly) Shut _up_, Freeman. LUCAS (to self) Freeman?!? FREEMAN (to Krieg) You know what to do. KRIEG (turning completely around to face Freeman) It's not necessary! Freeman is seen pushing past Krieg. Without warning, the sound of a gun firing is heard, as is a brief cry of pain. Then contact is abruptly terminated. LUCAS What the Hell?!? (to Kroese) Get him back! KROESE I'm trying! Krieg reappears. He is somewhat pale, and looks upset. LUCAS (almost in horror) Ben? KRIEG (almost to himself) God_damn_ it! CUT TO DINING ROOM Lucas is on the monitor, Krieg is facing the monitor, and is backlit by it. Freeman has retreated into the shadows. KRIEG (continuing, angrily-- at Lucas) Good going. (beat, difficultly) Freeman just shot O'Neill. O'Neill has been shot in the side and is bleeding profusely. Hudson and Sanchez are trying to help him. KRIEG Don't do it again, or Freeman'll kill him. Lucas reacts with shock. LUCAS (grasping at straws) Ben, it was a _spectre_! What do you expect me to do?! I can't just-- Krieg cuts him off. The screen goes blank. Kroese looks up. KROESE Ensign, General McGath would like to talk to you. Lucas does _not_ look happy. He nods reluctantly. LUCAS Put him on. Kroese flicks on the monitor, and McGath appears. He is in a bad mood. MCGATH Report. LUCAS He cut me off. I _tried_ to apologize, but-- MCGATH For what? LUCAS (upset) Ben wouldn't listen to me! I wouldn't-- MCGATH Are you saying that you _had_ him in communications, and you _let him go_?!? LUCAS I didn't have much of a choice in the matter. I can't tell you how sorry I-- MCGATH (interrupts) Look, _Ensign_, I don't think you appreciate the gravity of the situation. Lucas appears incensed, McGath doesn't notice. MCGATH (continuing) Now, Mr. Wolenczak, I can understand if you're having difficulties. After all, you're younger than most of our people in the negotiating division, and you haven't had the benefit of their training. LUCAS (breaks in) But sir, I-- MCGATH You're inexperienced, Wolenczak. (he sighs) I'm sorry that Captain Hudson's lack of judgement put you in this position. He had no business leaving a kid in command while _seaQuest_ was in port. Piccolo steps forward, glances nervously from Lucas to McGath, sweeps the bridge with a glance, and clears his throat. PICCOLO `Scuse me, sir. McGath studies him for several moments. His eyes fall on Piccolo's rank insignia. He raises an eyebrow. MCGATH Warrant Officer? Piccolo steps forwards, edgy. PICCOLO I'd just like to say that I don't think you're bein' fair to Lucas. He's doin' the best he can, sir. (beat) We all are. McGath appears to consider this for several seconds. He nods and directs his attention back to Lucas, obviously not taking Tony seriously. MCGATH (to Lucas) Be that as it may, Ensign, sometimes your best _isn't good enough_. Maybe you didn't think of this when you cut off communications-- LUCAS _I didn't_ cut off-- MCGATH (ignoring him, continuing) --But this is _real life_, not some VR video game that gives you extra points for getting people killed. Lucas is silent for several seconds, carefully considering his words. When he finally speaks, it is with great seriousness, as well as thinly veiled anger. LUCAS (slowly and deliberately) Sir, are you implying that you think I'm not taking my job seriously? Glances are exchanged between Jarvis, Kroese, and South. They, as well as Piccolo, know that Lucas is walking a fine line between insubordination and defending his abilities. McGath considers Lucas for a moment, as though seeing him in a new light. He doesn't like what he sees. MCGATH (angrily) I am _implying_, _Ensign_, that you have inadequate knowledge of the situation to be able to make an educated decision in this matter. (beat) Now, I recommend that you come to terms with the fact that there are three very real people in that conference, one of whom is seriously injured, and until we get ahold of Commander Ford or Lieutenant Henderson, you are their only chance of living through this. Lucas attempt to mask his indignation. MCGATH Is there a _problem_, Ensign? Lucas "gets a grip" on his "attitude". LUCAS (coldly) No, sir. McGath smiles. MCGATH Good. Then I want you to get those terrorists Lucas "loses it" here. LUCAS (challenging, almost yelling) With all due respect, sir, Ben Krieg is _not_ a terrorist. MCGATH (angrily, silencing) When he takes an international scientific conference hostage, along with two senior officers of the flagship of the UEO, he most certainly _is_ a terrorist. Lucas is cowed-- almost. McGath eyes him suspiciously. MCGATH (with almost exaggerated politeness) Ensign, I know that you and the lieutenant were part of the original _seaQuest_ crew. For that reason, if you think that there's _any_ possibility that you won't be able to put the safety of the delegates above that of Krieg or his associates, I'm willing to allow you to step down from your position now. One of your officers can take over. Lucas blanches, McGath doesn't notice. Lucas is obviously offended by McGath's estimation of his abilities, but there is also something deeper in his expression: he's wondering if McGath might not have a point of some sort. MCGATH (continuing) It won't reflect on your performance as an officer-- LUCAS (cuts him off, angrily) Sir, thank you for the offer, but everything is under control. _seaQuest_ out. He gestures to Kroese, who cuts the channel. Lucas sinks into the command chair. Piccolo looks concerned. PICCOLO You okay? LUCAS (muttering) I _swear_, if I hafta talk to that _thick_headed _idiot_ again... He trails off and shakes his head, then looks to Kroese. LUCAS No more communications-- unless it's important. She nods, he stands. He leaves the bridge. Piccolo watches. Several seconds pass before he sighs and jogs after him. Kroese, Jarvis, and South exchange glances. CUT TO MOONPOOL Lucas is sitting by the edge of the water, watching Darwin swim. Piccolo enters, out of breath. He walks towards Lucas and stands behind him. PICCOLO You okay? Lucas, whose head is cradled in his arms, shakes his head. Piccolo senses the gravity of the situation. He sits next to Lucas. PICCOLO I had a tough time findin' ya. Lucas' voice is muffled by his arms, but it's easy to tell that he's been crying. LUCAS (shakily) He's right, you know. PICCOLO McGath? Lucas, get real! Lucas looks up. His eyes are red and raw. He takes a deep breath, but his voice continues to shake. LUCAS Tony, you don't understand. He doesn't think I can do anything to help them... Maybe I can't. I mean, look at how I pissed off Ben! He _disconnected the channel_! Piccolo pats him on the shoulder. PICCOLO (gently) Lucas, you _know_ that wasn't your fault. You're doin' the best you can! LUCAS You heard him, though! My best just doesn't cut it. (beat) If anything happens to any of them, it's on my head. PICCOLO Then make sure nothin' happens to 'em. KROESE (over com) Ensign, this is Kroese. We've just been contacted by the-- terrorists. Regarding the hostages. He says there've been complications, and he needs to talk to you. Lucas looks up, shocked and dreading. Piccolo helps him stand. He is extremely unsteady. Piccolo helps him out of the room. CUT TO BRIDGE Lucas and Piccolo enter. Lucas has composed himself somewhat, but it is obvious that he is still upset and has been crying. KROESE I know you said not to let anything else through, but-- Lucas gestures to the screen as Piccolo resumes tactical. LUCAS Get him _on_ already! Kroese flips some keys and Krieg appears. He looks upset and nervous. Lucas manages a weak smile, trying to mask his disconcertion. LUCAS Ben? What's going on? KRIEG (hesitating) It's O'Neill. He's, um, taken a turn for the worse. Lucas starts. The weak smile is replaced by a wide-eyed stare. LUCAS (concerned) Tim? Is he okay? KRIEG (factually) He's-- he's going in and out of consciousness. I don't know if he's going to be able to hold on much longer. Lucas stares for several seconds, shocked. LUCAS Oh my God. Ben-- you've got to let me get him out of there! You-- KRIEG (cautiously) I can't do that. Lucas stares in shock. LUCAS You can't do-- Ben-- I-- You-- Tim-- (beat) What if he-- KRIEG Lucas, get ahold-- LUCAS (cuts him off) Get ahold of myself?!? Is _that_ what you're going to tell me? Beats. KRIEG (trying to make light of it) Pretty ridiculous, huh? Lucas appears horrified at his lightness. LUCAS Ri-- (beat) Ben, how could you _say_ that? What if Tim _dies_? There is silence for a moment. Krieg looks over his shoulder at the room, then back to Lucas. KRIEG (looks up) Can we take this to a private channel? Lucas glances to Piccolo, who shrugs. He stands and goes to his normal station, where he pulls on a headset and looks at Kroese. She flips the channel and Krieg vanishes from the screen, LUCAS Ben? CUT TO DINING ROOM Krieg is standing at a com panel, headphones on. Freeman is on the other side of the room, watching the hostages. KRIEG (quietly, so Freeman won't hear) Lucas. I need a favor. If anything happens to me-- Freeman walks over and "hovers" for a moment. Krieg cuts himself off and turns mildly pale. FREEMAN Having a...discussion, Krieg? Krieg glares at him. KRIEG Shut up, Freeman. I'm in the middle of-- LUCAS (confused, over com) Ben? Are you okay? Freeman gives Krieg a "look". FREEMAN Seven hours. Krieg is angered by his warning, and watches him with a hateful expression on his face. LUCAS (over com) Ben? The sound of Lucas' voice brings Krieg back from his rage. He returns his attention to the conversation. KRIEG If anything happens to me, I need to know that somebody knows why I did it. LUCAS (confused) Ben, what are you talking about? KRIEG Have you ever heard of strychnine? Lucas thinks for several seconds. LUCAS (confused) Yeah. It's a poison. From an Australian tree. Right? Krieg nods soberly. CUT TO BRIDGE All is as before. KRIEG They told me that they bonded it to some kind of delaying agent. But without treatment, it's still gonna kill me. LUCAS You're willing to trade Tim's life for yours? Krieg takes a deep breath, upset and unnerved, and seeing that Lucas isn't about to let himself be distracted from the hostages. KRIEG Lucas, I can't let you-- LUCAS (cutting him off) I can't just let him die! (beat, calms) Look, Ben, if you want, I'll take his place. Krieg thinks this over. KRIEG I'll get back to you. Krieg cuts the transmission. PICCOLO (to Lucas) You ain't serious, are you? Lucas ignores him and starts walking toward the door. Piccolo follows him for several steps, then jogs up, grabs him by the arm, and stops him. PICCOLO (quietly) At least wait till Commander Ford-- LUCAS (cutting him off) Tim doesn't have that kind of time. KROESE Ensign, he's hailing us. LUCAS (to self) That was fast. (to Kroese) Put him on. Krieg appears on-screen. KRIEG (regretfully) Sorry, Lucas. I can't change Freeman's mind. Beat. FREEMAN (O.S.) But we'll release the woman. KRIEG (to Freeman) What?!? Freeman pushes past Krieg and appears on-screen. Lucas' expression hardens. LUCAS Fine. The scientist for me. All react. FREEMAN (nods, seemingly pleased) You come in unarmed and alone. (beat, hinting) Oh, and make sure to leave your PAL behind. We wouldn't want anyone _else_ getting hurt. (beat) Understood? Lucas nods. KRIEG Lucas-- Freeman cuts the channel before Krieg can finish. LUCAS (rising, to Piccolo) Tony, you're in command. Piccolo reacts. Lucas leaves the bridge. FADE TO COMMERCIAL END ACT TWO TO BE CONTINUED... Dr. Perry is advising him. PERRY Whatever you do, don't give him any painkillers. Lucas stops, surprised. LUCAS _Don't_ give him a painkiller? PERRY (explaining) His metabolism will be slow enough as it is. Lucas nods, accepting her explanation. LUCAS Okay. Thanks. Beat. LUCAS Doctor, do you know of an antidote for strychnine? Perry looks at him quizzically. PERRY Why do you need to know? Lucas looks around, making sure that there isn't anyone nearby. LUCAS (quieter) Because Ben said he was poisoned, and that's why he's helping Freeman. He said that somebody gave him a strychnine derivitive, and he's going to-- PERRY (shakes head, cuts him off) If it's a derivitive, I can't help you. It wouldn't respond correctly to an antidote, even if we had one on board. (beat) I'm sorry. (beat) If you could get him aboard-- LUCAS I can't. Not now, at least. Perry nods. PERRY Well then, I think you've got everything. Lucas nods. Perry leaves. Lucas resumes packing for a moment, until Piccolo enters. Piccolo's not happy about what's happening. PICCOLO Lucas, what the hell do you think you're doing?!? LUCAS (simply) What I have to. Piccolo grabs Lucas by the arm. PICCOLO Are you nuts? (beat) I mean, how d'you even know that they'll let this lady go? LUCAS (firmly) Ben'll keep his word. PICCOLO He already shot-- LUCAS (quickly, interrupting) _Freeman_ shot Tim. Ben tried to stop him. It sounds almost as if Lucas is trying to convince himself of this fact. Piccolo isn't convinced. PICCOLO (objecting) But-- LUCAS (interrupting, putting his foot down) Look, he's my best friend. I trust him. Piccolo considers this. PICCOLO I know where you're comin' from. But I don't like it. LUCAS You don't have to. Lucas grabs the medkit and leaves. Piccolo looks after him. CUT TO DINING ROOM Krieg and Freeman are arguing. KRIEG What the hell were you _thinking_? FREEMAN Don't question me. KRIEG He's just a _kid_! You're not gonna-- FREEMAN (cutting him off) I'm going to do my job. And believe me, Krieg, I'm going to enjoy it. KRIEG But-- the scientist-- And Hudson-- I thought-- FREEMAN (cutting him off) You're not being paid to think. And if you don't stop arguing, you're not getting anything _else_, either. KRIEG (indicates Hudson and O'Neill) You don't think I'm going to trust you to stay here with them. FREEMAN (condescending) I doubt that you'd like Wolenczak to have an intimate encounter with a plasma pistol when I "mistake" his presence as a hostile act. Am I wrong? Krieg opens his mouth to object, then shuts it, then looks at Hudson, O'Neill, and Sanchez, then back at Freeman. KRIEG (bitterly) Go to Hell. He grabs Sanchez by the arm and stalks out, keeping his weapon on her. She doesn't struggle. CUT TO CONFERENCE AUDITORIUM Lucas enters the rear of the auditorium. It is dark. He looks around. He is terrified of what is happening, but doing his best to cover his fear. LUCAS Hello? Anybody there? Krieg is in the shadows, holding Sanchez. He has a gun trained on her. She isn't struggling. KRIEG Over here. Lucas whirls, but is unable to tell where Krieg is standing. LUCAS (attempting "tough" exterior) Where's the scientist? KRIEG (ignoring the question) Get your hands out where I can see them. Lucas slowly raises his hands, holding the medkit, and looks around, trying to see Krieg. LUCAS I'm unarmed, Ben. I kept my part of the deal. It's your turn. Krieg reluctantly lets Sanchez go, shoves her away, and shifts his aim to Lucas. KRIEG (to Sanchez) Hasta la vista. Get the hell out. Sanchez gets the point and backs out of the room. Once she's gone, Krieg's attention focuses on Lucas. He steps out of the shadows and toward Lucas. KRIEG Step over to the wall. _Now_. Lucas hesitates. Krieg powers up his gun and moves closer. KRIEG (extremely reluctant, but trying not to show it) Don't make me do something I know I'll regret, Lucas. _Put the medkit down and get against the goddamned wall_. LUCAS (as he moves toward the wall) I'm not putting it down. Tim needs it. Krieg raises the gun to Lucas' temple. Lucas pales dramatically. KRIEG (yelling, but more out of fear than anger) What the hell is wrong with you?!? I said _put it down_! Lucas gulps and draws a quick breath. LUCAS (shaking, but determined) No. Krieg's grip tightens momentarily before he lets the gun drop to his side. KRIEG Fine. Come on. He grabs Lucas by the arm and roughly pulls him out of the room, keeping the gun against the small of Lucas' back. CUT TO DINING ROOM Lucas and Krieg enter. Krieg shoves Lucas into the room. Lucas glares at him for a moment before his attention shifts to Hudson and O'Neill. He takes a step toward them, but is stopped by Freeman. He glares at Lucas suspiciously, and his eyes linger momentarily on the Medkit. He shifts his gaze to Krieg. FREEMAN (to Krieg) Did I say he could bring that with him? Lucas ignores Freeman and shoves by to O'Neill and Hudson. He opens that medkit and pulls out a can of disinfectant. He begins cleaning the wound. By now, Lucas is angry enough to be acting without considering the result of his behavior. LUCAS (to Krieg and Freeman as he works, reining in fury) The agreement was that I'd be unarmed and incommunicado. As for the medkit, you should thank me. This way when the UEO sends in a strike team, you won't have a murder charge on your-- He is cut off as Freeman grabs him by the upper arm, yanks him to his feet, and shoves him up against the wall. The can of disinfectant clatters to the floor. Freeman shoves his gun against Lucas' cheek, furious. Hudson attempt to stand, but Krieg halfhearted holds him back. FREEMAN (dangerously) I may have missed my chance to put a hole in this head of yours during my brief stay at Osiris base, Wolenczak, but _believe me_, if any of you get on my nerves, _you_ will be the first to go. Lucas tries not to react. Freeman releases him with a violent shove, and he sinks to the floor. Krieg leaves Hudson and takes a step towards Lucas, but a warning glance from Freeman prevents him from doing anything further. Lucas watches the exchange, and shoots Krieg a withering glare before collecting himself and moving back to O'Neill. O'Neill is fading in and out of consciousness, and at the moment, in a state of semi-delirium. He opens his eyes and sees Lucas, and acts surprised. O'NEILL Lucas? He tries to sit up, Hudson and Lucas push him back down. LUCAS Tim, stay still! Don't worry... O'NEILL (wryly) Don't worry? Lucas, have you ever tried not to worry when you have a gaping hole in your side? Lucas watches Krieg, who is in obvious discomfort, sitting on the other side of the room. He accidentally squirts Hudson's hand with the disinfectant. HUDSON Ensign, watch where you spray that. Lucas looks up, as though preoccupied. LUCAS (as he sees) Oh. Sorry. HUDSON Is there something on your mind? LUCAS He's not on their side. HUDSON Who's not on whose side? O'NEILL (piping up) No... Who's on first... LUCAS Huh? O'NEILL Qu'est-ce dans deuxieme... No si esta en tercero... O'Neill trails off and falls into a stupor. Lucas stares, confused. Krieg and Freeman look on. LUCAS (to Hudson) He's getting worse. HUDSON I know. O'Neill stirs. O'NEILL (half-conscious) So, how am I doing? Both Lucas and Hudson are silent, as if trying to decide the best way to break the news. LUCAS (carefully) Tim, you're bleeding. O'NEILL (unconcerned) Really? I seem to do that a lot. Lucas and Hudson exchange glances, unsure of how to take the comment. O'NEILL (stream-of-consciousness, continuing) I don't remember the first time I started bleeding. My dad said that it was from a paper cut. Have you ever noticed that paper cuts always tingle, _then_ hurt? They don't hurt right away. LUCAS Tim, I think you should take it easy-- O'NEILL (continuing) `Take it easy'. That's a song, right? By the Eagles, I think. You know, I've never liked birds much. I'm not big on animals... HUDSON Lieutenant, you're delirious! Now calm down! O'Neill laughs weakly, then suddenly becomes lucid and panicked. O'NEILL (almost shouting) Calm down?!? I'm dying, and you want me to _calm down_?!? Freeman walks over. FREEMAN Having trouble controlling your lieutenant? He draws his gun. Krieg sees and reacts quickly. He crosses the room and jerks Freeman's arm back. KRIEG (from behind) Freeman, back off. Freeman pulls his arm loose, "dusts himself off", and gives Krieg a condescending glare. FREEMAN (to Krieg) Don't try to be a hero, Krieg. You don't have the time. Freeman holds up his wrist, which has a watch on. FREEMAN (continuing) Three hours. Krieg pales slightly, and looks down, cowed. Lucas is visibly confused. KRIEG (to Lucas and Hudson, almost desperately) Look, just-- Just try to keep him quiet. Hudson looks down at O'Neill-- unconscious again. HUDSON (resentfully) I don't think that'll be a problem. Camera shows O'Neill lying motionless. The camera stays on him from this point, through Hudson's line. HUDSON (continuing) He's unconscious. LUCAS (to Krieg) What's in three hours? KRIEG Nothing. Never mind. LUCAS Ben-- KRIEG (cutting him off) I said it's nothing. Lucas looks hurt and surprised. Hudson stands and moves next to him. HUDSON (warning) Ensign. Be quiet and sit down. LUCAS (to Hudson) But-- HUDSON (forcefully) That is an _order_, Ensign. Krieg's response to this is electric. KRIEG (to Hudson, furious, quickly) It's real easy for you, giving orders, isn't it? (beat, there is a confused silence) Always telling someone else to do things, never doing them yourself. (beat) Just like when my group was trying to run the border of the Aleutian Confederacy. Hudson thinks for a moment, then it "clicks", and his expression shifts to one of surprise. HUDSON (surprised) That was you? LUCAS (to both, still confused) What are you talking about? HUDSON (to Lucas, looking at Krieg) A conflict between my ship and some mercenaries. We won, but we lost two Specters, and one of their pilots, my-- KRIEG (cutting him off, yelling, half-furious, half-anguished) You made me kill her! She was the only woman I ever loved-- and _I_ fired the shot that blew her to pieces! (beat, quieter, lost in memory) I didn't know it was her until one of my people picked up the body. (beat, almost a whisper) She'd been cut to shreds by shrapnel. I couldn't give her a quick death. (beat) I didn't realize she was trying to surrender until after I fired. And then it was too late. I always kinda wondered if she knew it was me. If she even cared anymore. (beat, "coming back") And I never even got to explain. You forced us to retreat before I had the chance to tell you that we were on a mission of mercy. Hudson looks horrified. It is obvious that's Krieg's story is disturbing him greatly-- and he didn't know Krieg's motives at the time. KRIEG (continuing) I tried to hail you before you opened fire on us. To tell you what was going on. I knew it musta looked bad-- three unaffiliated ships, heavily armed, with stealth plating. But there was a _medical emergency_ up there. Lives were at stake. I didn't have time for legalities. (beat) Maybe if I hadn't been in such a goddamned hurry, Katie'd still be around. Lucas finally "gets it". LUCAS (in horror) Hitchcock? You killed Commander Hitchcock?!? HUDSON (uncomfortably) Actually, she'd have been Captain Hitchcock in a few days. (beat) She'd just been promoted. Krieg closes his eyes. KRIEG (whispered) I didn't know... A slight moan from the floor gets everyone's attention. O'Neill is now half-conscious. O'NEILL (slowly) Did someone mention Commander Hitchcock? No one can bring himself to answer. O'NEILL (continuing) I've been thinking about her a lot, lately. (gestures vaguely to Krieg) You guys looked like you were having fun. O'Neill's mention of Hitchcock gets Krieg's attention. O'NEILL (continuing, elaborating) It was the time we picked up the bad transmitter in the torpedo bay. (Krieg is blank, O'Neill continues) Remember? Right before we lost the ship. I remember wondering what the hell she was thinking. And you know, I'm still curious. She hated you so much... At least, that's what she used to tell every-- KRIEG (softly, but still interrupting) I remember that night... (sadly half-grins) Kinda. (beat) Last time she said she loved me. I wanted to ask her if she meant it. Lucas moves over to Krieg's side. He puts his hand on Krieg's arm. LUCAS Ben, I'm sorry. About everything. But this... (gestures to Freeman, O'Neill, the room in general) Won't help you. It won't bring her back. KRIEG I know that. But it'll keep me alive. (beat, looks up) And you know, I deserve that. Not just for what happened then. For everything. Everything I put her through. LUCAS Ben, you can't beat yourself up over something that happened years ago. KRIEG Why not? It gives me a reason to get up in the morning. (Lucas reacts, Krieg continues) If she can't exact some sort of revenge on me, I'm more than happy to do it for her. I owe her that. ACT FOUR FADE IN TO KITCHEN It is the small but light kitchen of the beach house where Ford and Henderson are spending their shore leave. Ford is making salad at the counter. Henderson is doing chicken stir fry at the stove. Both are in casual civvies-- Ford in shorts and shirt, Henderson in shorts and tank top. Ford is uneasy with Henderson cooking, but trying not to show it. She is somewhat defensive, and it's obvious that she's not overly comfortable with doing the cooking. She and Ford are chatting as they work. As the scene progresses, one notes that they are interacting like a married couple. Neither is aware of this. FORD (teasing) I didn't realize that you cooked. HENDERSON (in spirit) Well, I usually don't. FORD (not serious) Oh, c'mon. I bet you were the best chef in your home ec class. Henderson murmurs something under her breath. Ford looks up FORD What was that? HENDERSON (defensively) The course was called Home and Careers... FORD ("uh-_huh_") Okaaay... HENDERSON (matter of factly) ...And I almost burned down the school. It takes a moment for Ford to realize that she's serious. When he does, he stifles a laugh. Henderson whirls. HENDERSON It's not funny! Ford is attempting to keep down his obvious amusement. He isn't doing a very good job. FORD (amused) Of course not... Henderson shoots him an overreactive glare. He attempts a serious expression. He fails. Henderson gives him a mildly disapproving glare before turning back to the stove. Ford resumes cutting veggies, etc. After several seconds, he moves to the refrigerator and begins rummaging through it. He interrupts. FORD (from fridge) Did you remember to get tomatoes? Henderson nods. HENDERSON Why? FORD Because they're not where they should be. Henderson puts down the spoon she's using to stir the stir fry, placing it dangerously close to the burner. She joins Ford at the fridge. She reaches into the dairy compartment on the door and pulls out a tomato, unfazed. She passes it to Ford, who stares from it to the door to her as they straighten. Neither moves away. FORD What's it doing in there? HENDERSON Where else would it be? FORD (gesturing) The _vegetable drawer_, maybe? HENDERSON Tomatoes are _fruit_. Ford sighs. FORD Either way. Although he appears somewhat annoyed, it's not serious. There is a momentary silence, and the tension is obvious. Suddenly, it is interrupted by the sound of a fire alarm. Both whirl. A grease fire has begun. Henderson picks it up and removes it from the burner. Some of the grease gets on her shirt. Ford grabs the lid of the pot and places it over the top, then takes the pot and puts it on a different, not- turned-on burner. Henderson looks at herself a grease stain on her shirt, etc. She looks at Ford, who's attempting to salvage the stir fry. HENDERSON Jonathan, I'm going to go get changed. Will you be okay in here? He gives her a look: _she's_ asking _him_? She nods. HENDERSON I'll be back in a few minutes. She leaves the room. Ford continues cooking. CUT TO EXT. BEACH HOUSE Shot of Fredricks walking up to the door. She knocks. No one answers. She waits a moment, then pushes the door open and walks in. CUT TO KITCHEN Ford grabs a piece of chicken from the stir fry and tastes it it's _hot_! He winces, then swallows quickly. He hears footsteps form behind him and assumes that it's Henderson. He doesn't turn. FORD Lonnie? That was pretty quick. (beat) So, what'd you change into? He turns and sees Fredricks standing in the doorway. He reacts with complete and utter shock. FORD (flatly) Fredricks? She raises and eyebrow. FREDRICKS (looks him over, surprised) Commander? Henderson enters, wearing a light sundress. She stops. HENDERSON (shocked) Lieutenant Fredricks? Fredricks recovers. FREDRICKS (to Ford) Sir, I have some bad news. FORD (exasperated) What now? FREDRICKS Captain Hudson and Lieutenant O'Neill, as well as one of the scientists, are being held by a group of terrorists. (beat) And Wolenczak's in command of the boat. Ford and Henderson exchange glances. HENDERSON (wide-eyed) Lucas...command... (turns to Ford) Jonathan, we've gotta go back. FREDRICKS We can't. I took a gamble coming in the spectre. From here on in, everything is all business. FORD "Took a gamble"? FREDRICKS Krieg said he didn't want anyone leaving. FORD (shocked) Krieg? FREDRICKS Sir, I brought comm equipment in the spectre... FORD How long will it take to set up? CUT TO BRIDGE Piccolo is in command, South is at tactical, Kroese and Jarvis are at same positions as before. KROESE (to Piccolo) We're being hailed. PICCOLO (uncomfortably) Put 'em on. Ford appears on the screen. FORD (surprised) Where's Ensign Wolenczak? PICCOLO (looking away slightly) He, uh, kinda exchanged himself for one of the-- FORD (angrily) You let Lucas _give_ himself to Krieg?!? PICCOLO (defensively) What was I s'posed to do? He _does_ outrank me. FORD Fredricks told us what happened up to the point she left. There was no reason for Lucas to go! PICCOLO It was the only way to get that scientist, uh, Sanchez, out. (beat) And a medkit in, sir. FORD (blankly) Medkit? Why do they need a medkit? PICCOLO Tim got shot. FORD (worried) Is he okay? PICCOLO I dunno. That's why Lucas had to go in. FORD So...you're in command? Piccolo nods. FORD That means you're in charge of the negotiations. PICCOLO Yes, sir. FORD (almost to self) I never would've thought Krieg could go this far around the bend... (sighs) Look, just keep this channel open. Until they start letting ships in, we're stuck on Moorea. If they contact you again, I'll talk you through anything that you think you can't handle. PICCOLO (nodding) Thanks, Commander. Ford disappears from the screen. SOUTH (to Piccolo) So, uh, what do we do now? PICCOLO Wait. FADE TO COMMERCIAL END ACT FOUR TO BE CONTINUED... Copyright 1996 Rachel Brody & Melissa Beattie =========================== PART 5 ===================================== See Teaser for all disclaimers. ACT FIVE FADE IN TO DINING ROOM O'Neill is lying totally motionless, breathing shallowly. Hudson and Lucas are sitting on the floor, watching over him. Krieg is pacing, waiting for instructions from Mallory. A small beep goes off. He hurries to flip on the channel. Mallory appears on the screen. MALLORY ("innocently") Ben, so nice to talk again. (beat) How are you feeling? KRIEG (difficultly) I'm _fine_, thank you very much. He obviously isn't. MALLORY (amused) Oh really? He checks his watch. MALLORY And here I was, thinking that it had been eleven hours and forty-nine minutes since you and Freeman left my ship. Krieg isn't willing to play along with the mercenary. KRIEG Look, I did this. Okay? (beat) What about _your_ half of the bargain? Mallory shrugs. MALLORY I really think it's out of my hands, now. You'll have to have it out with Mason. (beat) Until then, I must admit... Your employer is very satisfied by the results of your... escapade. KRIEG (almost hesitating) And _our_ employer would be? Mallory looks at him for a moment, as though wondering if he should tell Krieg or not. Finally, he decides. MALLORY Oh, why not. (beat) Deon Industries. Krieg is shocked into silence. MALLORY (enjoying himself) Larry sends his regards. (beat) Have a nice day. (beat) Or, at least a nice ten minutes. He disconnects the channel. Krieg stares at it for a moment. Then, he walks over to where Lucas, Hudson, and O'Neill are. Freeman watches them from the other side of the room. Krieg is still a bit overwhelmed by what he's just found out. KRIEG (to Lucas) How is he? Lucas shrugs, and remains silent. KRIEG (concerned) Is something wrong? Lucas stands. LUCAS (incredulous) How can you ask me that?!? Tim's dying! Okay, that's enough. Krieg's having a bad day as it is, and he doesn't need to be reminded that he's helping other have bad days, too. KRIEG (angrily) I know that! Dammit, Lucas, I'm not heartless! I told you why I'm doing this. (slowly, spelling it out) I don't have a choice. LUCAS (coldly) There is _always_ a choice. Ben, if you give up now-- FREEMAN (cutting in) Then he's dead. Freeman points the gun in Lucas' direction. FREEMAN (continuing) And so are you. LUCAS (to Krieg, ignoring Freeman) If you don't give up now, you're responsible for Tim's death. (beat, off Freeman) And probably ours, too. Lucas starts to turn away, but turns back as Krieg speaks. KRIEG (difficultly) It's not that simple, Lucas! You can't-- Krieg cuts himself off as his body suddenly jerks. LUCAS (concerned and scared) Ben? Krieg's knees buckle, and he falls to the floor. Freeman moves closer, but makes no move to help. Lucas starts to move toward them, but Hudson holds him back. LUCAS (to Hudson) Captain! Please-- Hudson shakes his head, and keeps his hold on Lucas. FREEMAN (to Krieg) Well. It looks like your twelve hours are up. Krieg begins to undergo convulsions. Freeman is watching him, making no move to help. Lucas is still being restrained by Hudson, O'Neill is unconscious. LUCAS (to Freeman) Give him the antidote! FREEMAN (still watching Krieg, to Lucas) You're hardly in a position to be giving orders, Wolenczak. (beat, smiles malevolently) But I'll give it to him. (beat) Provided he begs me hard enough. KRIEG (through convulsions, resentfully) Forget it. FREEMAN That's what you say now. (beat, shrugs) But in a few moments...as the pain gets worse...and worse... Krieg is in more and more pain as Freeman speaks. Lucas struggles harder and harder to break free of Hudson's grip. FREEMAN (continuing) Can you feel it, Krieg? Can you feel the poison, eating you up inside? The fire searing your veins? This description is beginning to get to Krieg, especially since it's clear that it's a pretty accurate one of what he feels like. KRIEG (struggling to speak) Give me the antidote, Freeman! (beat, closes eyes) Please... Freeman shakes his head in mock disappointment. FREEMAN You'll have to do better than that. Finally, Krieg decides that this is no time for trying to retain dignity. KRIEG (difficultly) Please, Freeman, I'm... Krieg's voice falters then resumes. KRIEG (continuing) I'm _begging_ you. Give me the antidote. Freeman leans down close to Krieg. FREEMAN (whispering, deliberately) There... (beat) ...is... (beat ...none. LUCAS (almost a scream) _WHAT?!?!_ FREEMAN (continuing, unrepentantly, at Krieg) Once we left Mallory's ship, there was only enough for twelve hours. Krieg reacts. Freeman stands and chuckles. Lucas breaks out of Hudson's grip and starts to move towards Krieg. Freeman sobers instantly, and points the gun at Lucas. FREEMAN Stay where you are, Wolenczak. (looks down at Krieg, smiling evilly) I want to enjoy this. At Freeman's moment of inattention, Lucas quickly launches himself at Freeman, knocking him to the floor. He rips the gun out of Freeman's hands and stands for a moment, gun aimed, staring at him. The he hands the gun to Hudson and goes to Krieg's side. Krieg's convulsions have gotten worse. Meanwhile, still covering Freeman, who isn't offering a hell of a lot in the way of resistance, Hudson goes over to the communications monitor and, in the background, calls the authorities that are ringing the conference building. LUCAS Ben? KRIEG Lucas... (reaches out blindly) Where are you? I can't see you. Lucas grips Krieg's hand, and tries to hold him still. Lucas fails to do so. LUCAS (to Krieg) I'm here, Ben. (at the com link, yelling) We need a doctor! KRIEG Are you okay? LUCAS I'm fine, Ben. Don't worry. Krieg's breathing suddenly falters, and becomes erratic. LUCAS (alarmed) Ben! (beat) Don't leave me! KRIEG (difficultly, trying to reassure) I'm not going anywhere. At this point, a medteam, headed by Dr. Perry, and the rent-a- guards arrive. Oddly enough, they're from Deon International. The medteam rushes over to Krieg, and the police take Freeman into custody. They exit. LUCAS (to Perry) Will he be okay? Perry checks her portable scanner. PERRY He should be. We'll get him hooked up to a blood purifier. After a few days, he'll be as good as new. LUCAS (to Krieg) You hear that, Ben? You're gonna be okay. (beat) Ben? Krieg has lapsed into unconsciousness. PERRY (checking Krieg's vitals) It's okay. He's stable. (to medteam) Get him back to _seaQuest_. Perry stands and walks out, one team carrying Krieg, another carrying O'Neill. Hudson comes and stands by Lucas. HUDSON They tell me that O'Neill should be fine. LUCAS (distracted) What's gonna happen to him? HUDSON To Krieg? Lucas nods. HUDSON Well, he was working under coercion. So there won't be any legal problems, if that's what you're asking. Lucas nods, still distracted. ESTABLISHING SHOT, EXTERIOR _SEAQUEST_ Caption reads several days later. CUT TO HUDSON'S OFFICE Lucas and Krieg enter. Lucas stands at near-attention. Krieg is relaxed. Hudson is reviewing a file on his computer monitor. Krieg's file. KRIEG You called? Hudson looks up slowly. Lucas' gaze is darting from one to the other, unsure of what is going on. HUDSON I've been looking over some old records. Thirteen years old, to be exact. Krieg nods slowly. HUDSON (continuing, reading from screen) "It is recommended that Lieutenant Benjamin Krieg be put in for a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, reasons being: One. He has demonstrated a willingness to preform above and beyond the call of duty on countless occasions. Two. He has shown the utmost respect for the chain of command. Three. He has been-- KRIEG (softly, interrupting) No thank you. Hudson looks up. HUDSON Excuse me? Krieg gestures to the monitor. KRIEG (explaining) That's the recommendation that Captain Bridger put in on my behalf when he found out I was going to resign my commission. Lucas looks on, confused. KRIEG (continuing) I told him then what I'm going to tell you now: I don't belong in the Navy anymore. Maybe I never did. Either way, as much as I appreciate the offer, I'm not going to accept it. HUDSON But-- KRIEG (cutting him off) That's really all I have to say on the matter. HUDSON In that case, you have a shuttle to catch. KRIEG (stiffly) Have a nice day. He leaves. Lucas follows. CUT TO CORRIDOR Lucas jogs up behind him. LUCAS Ben, what did you do that for? Krieg continues walking, but allows Lucas to catch up with him. KRIEG Do what for? LUCAS Tell Captain Hudson no! He was offering you a chance to-- KRIEG (harshly) To _what_, Lucas? To come back to a life that I wrote off thirteen years ago? To let myself be..._reassimilated_ into some kind of drone? (beat, softer) That's not what I want. It's not what I'm cut out to be. (beat, gestures around the corridor) This is _your_ life, Lucas. Not mine. Not anymore. LUCAS But what else can you do? Krieg takes a deep breath. He doesn't meet Lucas' eyes as he responds. KRIEG I don't know. After the past few days, I'm going to be _persona non grata_ in the private sector. Nobody wants a mercenary who's been blackmarked by the UEO as a troublemaker. (beat) But I _can't_ come back to the _seaQuest_. You asked me to the last time, and I told you no. And as much as I hate to leave you to the tender mercies of the UEO Navy and Oliver Hudson, I can't stay. Lucas looks crushed. Krieg finally looks him eye-to-eye. KRIEG (softer) But, hey. Cheer up. Maybe I can drop by sometime. CUT TO SHUTTLE BAY Lucas looks downcast. Krieg continues speaking as he walks to the shuttle, finally stopping when he gets to the ramp that leads to the shuttle. KRIEG Until then, I've got a living to make. Maybe I'll head... He trails off, seeing that he's just making the situation worse by offering Lucas an excuse. KRIEG So I guess this is it. LUCAS (holding in tears) Mm-hm. They hug. Finally, Krieg lets go and takes a step back. Lucas also steps away. Both are trying to keep their composure, but it is difficult. KRIEG (grinning sadly) You're a great kid, Lucas. Don't let the Navy ruin you. (beat) See you around. LUCAS (choked) Yeah. Krieg leaves without looking back. Once he turns the corner, Lucas shuts his eyes. He takes several deep breaths, then turns his back to the closing shuttle port doors. His PAL chirps. He takes it out. FORD (over PAL) Lucas? LUCAS Yeah? FORD (over PAL) You're late for duty. You'd better get up here. Lucas looks at the doors, now shut, thinking about what Krieg told him. Without responding to Ford, he switches his PAL off and walks out of the shuttle bay. But at the moment, he is in too much emotional pain to go on duty, and he isn't about to go up to the bridge.
