This is my first piece of seaQuest fic for a while, and I think it's the only Bridger/Westphalen story I've ever written, so comments in that area of things are especially appreciated. Thank you! Rachel ~ "What if I said...." By Rachel Brody "What if I said I was in love with you?" Kirsten kept hearing the words in her mind, over and over, thinking of the look on Nathan's face when he'd spoken them. She was leaving _seaQuest_, and he was making endless attempts to keep her from going. And then, as she'd boarded the shuttle, he'd had to go and say those words. "What if I said I was in love with you? Damnit, she'd been so _sure_. Now there were tears pricking in her eyes. She loved him too, and they both knew it, but they never seemed to have gotten around to saying the words. It had been taken for granted, an established part of their relationship. She loved him, he loved her, and neither of them ever said it because there were other people they'd said it to in their lives, other people with whom the words had spoiled. Speaking the words seemed to invite the relationship to grow old and stale, and neither of them had wanted that. They'd been like children, sneaking looks and more when they thought others weren't looking. And now... Well, of course she was going to leave. She had work to do. _seaQuest_ had been a wonderful chapter in her life, but it was one that was _over_ now. She was off to research with the daughter she'd only seen once or twice in years. Mending the breaks in a family that they had only barely been able to start working on the last time they'd seen each other. She had been feeling so good about that descision, even if she was unsure of how she'd reconcile it with her relationship with Nathan... ...and then the man had to go say something like that. "What if I said I loved you," indeed. Kristen's eyes narrowed slightly as she forced her heartbreak underneath in favor of anger. What would he have done if she'd agreed to stay? There was already a new Science Officer, lined up and ready to arrive! Would he have pulled strings to get her back her assignment? Used his influence to make both of them look bad, in the end? Start rumors about how she'd only gotten back aboard because she was sleeping with the Captain? Selfish bastard, she tried thinking. It didn't work. She couldn't think of Nathan as anything but...Nathan. A captain who had surpassed by far her expectations, and shown her that not _all_ military drones were military drones. She sighed as the transport pilot announced to her that they'd be redocking in New Cape Quest within a few minutes. The new _seaQuest_, almost set for launch, would be leaving within another few weeks. This had been a quick visit for a friend, to look it over and tell him she approved of the science facilities. And...she had to admit, she was _slightly_ jealous of whoever it was who was going to have the Chief Science Officer post. They were going to walk into a state-of-the-art world. While all she was doing was walking away.
