- Act I
- Adair, in narration, says that her earliest memories of Earth were the stories
of how it was once thought so vast, infinite skies, deep seas, boundless
mountain ranges - but they were only stories. She was born on the stations,
just like her parents and their parents before them. It's the only life she's
ever known. She tells her son the stories of Earth as they prepare to flee this
life on the stations, a life that is ordered, efficient, sterile, and, for a
small group of children, deadly. Her son is one of the unlucky ones; he was
born with the syndrome.
Yale is giving a geography lesson to an inattentive Uly, who is wearing his
syndrome gear. Uly asks if he can run right out of the ship when they arrive on
the planet. Adair, in narration, says Uly was diagnosed 6 years ago with a
disease their medical community hesitates to even recognize, a disease not
caused by the presence of a virus, but by the absence of what nature can
provide, an absence of Earth.
Adair enters the room, wearing gear; Yale is telling Uly about the planet they
will land on. Uly asks her if there will be beasts on the planet and describes
monsters he has seen in his virtual reality. She tells him she hopes there will
be no monsters like that and that it is time for bed, they have a big day
tomorrow. Adair gets a message on gear - O'Neill wants to talk to her in the
cockpit. She tells Uly she will tell him a scary story when she gets back.
Adair walks through the ship to the cockpit. In narration, she says this quest
to save her son has grown to the point that 250 syndrome families wait with them
in a colony ship docked alongside their small advance ship. In 8 hours they
will light out in search of a place like Earth once was, a planet they might
call home.
Adair enters the cockpit, which has fuzzy dice hanging from the ceiling. In
there are O'Neill, the pilot Alonzo, the navigator Pam, and the communications
operator Baines. O'Neill has Adair watch a news broadcast that says Miss
Adair's Eden project exploded upon departure. It is a government release,
pre-approved for broadcast one hour after their scheduled departure. Adair says
they've given up trying to stop them, they're just going to kill them? O'Neill
says if anyone finds a better world than these sanitized cans, they lose
control. O'Neill starts a resonance scan for explosives. There will be no
delays - they launch on schedule. Adair says no, they launch now. O'Neill
smiles and asks Alonzo their status. He gives the time until departure, then
says the port is wide open. They prepare for launch.
True is calling for Danziger, who is up a shaft on a rope. She comments that
the ship is moving and tells him they are looking for him.
O'Neill has called the crew together. The resonance check has found 97
nonregistered items on-board, and they must check out every one for explosives.
Danziger is surprised that they are doing an explosives check and launching at
the same time.
The colony ship pilot, Sheila, tells Alonzo that the syndrome children are
secure. Alonzo guides the advance ship to couple with the aft end of the colony
ship. Sheila tells him he was as smooth as always. Port Control asks what is
going on, but O'Neill says they are just stretching their legs in preparation
for the morrow.
Morgan, a level 4 government agent, is practicing his outrage at the launch in
the elevator on the way to the cockpit. What the hell is going on? He says it
wrong when he gets there. They don't have level 6 clearance! O'Neill replies
that since he is their government liaison, he should tell them what's going on.
Alonzo asks that someone talk to Port Control. Adair tells Morgan that if he is
still on board, he has no idea what his friends on level 6 have planned for
them. Morgan does not. Someone on a TV monitor tells Alonzo to stop launching;
he is not one of those lunatics. Alonzo replies that no one else can match
these people's credit rating; he can retire on what they are paying him. Port
Control tells them to return to dock or they will contact Port Authority.
O'Neill says they are making a run for it. A computer voice says that Bay 2
portal doors are now closing.
In Bess and Morgan's quarters, a crewman has found an unauthorized suitcase, but
it just contains Bess's lingerie.
Danziger is riding the elevator on his way to check out comm deck.
In the cockpit they are told that the guidance system is shut down. Alonzo will
have to pilot manually; if the hull is breached, there will be a helluva mess.
O'Neill tells Alonzo that if he's as good as he says he is, now's the time to
show him. Alonzo gives Pam marks to follow. She is very nervous about it.
Dyson Blaylock, the station manager, contacts them asking about all this
activity. Morgan tries to kiss ass with him, but O'Neill pulls him away.
Blaylock says movement like this could put their clearance at risk. After all
this time, this final insubordinate act. Everything they've done has been to
protect Adair and her group. No human has ever been as far as planet G-889.
Danziger comes in, getting a signal of an explosive device in the cockpit. On
gear, O'Neill tells Adair to keep Blaylock talking. Danziger finds an explosive
device attached to a TV monitor. Morgan is shocked to see it.
Throughout the rest of the sequence, we hear Blaylock blathering and Adair
responding, and we see quick, alternating shots of Blaylock and Adair talking,
O'Neill and Danziger dealing with the explosive device, the cockpit crew
maneuvering the ship, and the ship leaving the port. The key scenes: Blaylock
wants Adair to wait a few months, but she says these people are unwanted and
that no syndrome child has lived beyond 9 years. Uly is 8 and she will not
watch him die. The ship clears the dock just before the portal doors close.
O'Neill and Danziger send the explosive device off through an airlock, and it
explodes in space. O'Neill says they are already dead to the station people.
Morgan is surprised that they aren't coming after them.
Adair walks through the ship to an area with two levels. She asks Yale where
Dr. Vasquez is; he should be prepping Uly for cold sleep. Yale tells her he is
not on board; he is on the colony ship. They have no doctor? Well, Dr. Heller
is on board. She says Dr. Heller has no experience. Julia is right behind her,
waiting to prep Uly. She will monitor him for 24 hours before everyone else
goes down for hibernation. She reminds Adair of the risks a child like Uly
faces. Adair says they don't have much choice now, do they? No, they don't.
Danziger is upset about the risks they took departing as they did. O'Neill
tells Danziger they stick to the original contract: transport to and deposit on
the plant. Danziger says he still has to deal with the station people when he
gets back. O'Neill tallies the time - 22 light years each way; how many
administrations does he think that'll be? Adair arrives and says hazard pay
clause has been invoked. Danziger is pleased.
The advance ship separates from the colony ship. The colony ship people will be
in cold sleep 24 years. By the time they are out of it, those in the advance
ship will have set up New Pacifica. Alonzo tells Sheila he wishes he could
bring her along.
Julia and Adair are prepping Uly for cold sleep. He asks Adair if it will be
like any other night. She reassures him he will wake up and that when he does
they will be on the verge of a whole new life. Julia gives him the shot. Adair
and Yale tell him good night. Uly is sealed in a cold sleep chamber. Adair, in
narration, says they bring so many questions with them: Will this new planet
hold the key to healing humanity? Will the frontier hold the same promise it
did for their ancestors? And will Uly ever get to slay his monsters?
(Up to Table of Contents)
- Act II
- It is 22 years later, and the ship is repressurizing the cabin. Julia is
awakened from cold sleep.
Julia gets off the elevator with some difficulty; she looks awful. Alonzo is
in the cockpit cheerfully checking the ship's position. It is the pilot's job
to do so before everyone else is awakened. He says she'll be happy to know his
record is intact - he hasn't missed yet. Julia checks how he is with her
diaglove. He suggests he postpone everyone's defrost so the two of them can
celebrate life a little bit. She asks if that's the only come-on sleep-jumpers
can come up with these days. She says his reputation precedes him, but he tells
her he doesn't stick around long enough to make one. He wipes sleep from her
eyes as Danziger stumbles in. Julia checks him before leaving.
Alonzo laughs at Danziger and tells him they are on course, and he (Alonzo) won
the bet with the crew. Danziger asks if he's a morning person. It is
Danziger's third cold sleep (never more than 19 months, though), and he had a
weird dream. Alonzo has been under so many times, he no longer dreams. He
never gets used to how the world changes; one long sleep and everybody you knew
is almost a quarter of a century older. He holds up a picture of a woman and
says she is probably a grandmother by now. Danziger asks how old he is, and
Alonzo replies "A lot older than you, kid."
Adair is worried because Uly is still not awake; she wants Julia to give him a
stimulant. Julia tells her that he will be fine and that she knows what she is
doing. Adair knows - she checked . Julia has a cum laude in diagnostic
analysis, and her parents had her chromosomes skewed toward the medical arts.
Uly awakens and asks if they are there yet.
Danziger finds True, who is quite sleepy, and tells her to buzz her teeth. True
wants a cat when they get back. Danziger tells her one must win the
trans-station lottery, be a billionaire, to have a real cat because a pet
allowance is so expensive. She insists on getting one, and Danziger agrees.
Bess and Martin are in their quarters. Morgan is complaining; he can't believe
they are actually doing this. He hates travel and that Devon woman:
Miss-stop-the-world-my-son-is-sick-my-cyborg-tutor-and-I-want-to-get-off. Bess,
looking in the mirror, says she feels older. He yells that she is not; they
were in suspended animation. She says feelings cannot be suspended, and he
apologizes. He tells her she is his whole world, and they kiss.
True checks a panel in a corridor. Uly, in his syndrome gear, walks down the
corridor. He asks her not to stare at him. Yale enters with Uly's wheelchair
and tells him not to tire himself. He notices True. She says her father said
that they stopped the Yale program because they all went crazy. Yale agrees
that a few of the Yales had recall of their criminal past. Uly defends Yale,
saying he is a great tutor. Yales says it is too bad they were parting ways at
G-889; they could have all gotten to know each other.
O'Neill calls Adair to look at the planet through the view window. It's a place
to call home.
They release the communication dish from the front of the ship. Alonzo guides
it perfectly into location. O'Neill tells Alonzo to launch the cargo, then goes
to the head.
Once there, O'Neill takes out a cigar, sits on the closed toilet, and lights the
cigar. The glass container the cigar was in starts to roll off its ledge, then
suddenly O'Neill is hurled across the room. He leaves for the cockpit.
The ship is rocking violently, and everyone is being thrown about. Alonzo is
frantically trying to control the ship. He tells O'Neill the cargo pods
wouldn't release and are dragging them down. The release mechanism is jammed,
and they've picked up a heavy magnetic charge. A computer voice tells everyone
to head for evacuation pods 1, 2 or 3. Baines says the charges are dead.
Morgan gathers suitcases and Bess and heads out of their quarters. He has no
intention of dying on this thing.
In the upper level of the corridor, Adair, carrying Uly, passes Yale, who is
telling everyone not to panic. Julia is at a closet, filling a bag with medical
supplies. Everyone is being thrown about.
Danziger, searching for True, sees Bess and Morgan enter an evacuation pod.
Morgan closes the air lock. Danziger says not to leave; there are people still
there. Morgan releases the pod. A computer voice tells everyone to head for
evacuation pods 2 or 3. Danziger is disgusted.
O'Neill tells Alonzo to abort. Both leave the cockpit.
Danziger finds True hiding in a cabinet. He carries her off.
Alonzo passes Julia and tells her to hurry. He is thrown into the closet.
Danziger reaches evacuation pod 2, but Pam tells him there's no room - take the
other one. The pod is released from the ship.
Alonzo, who has been helping Julia fill her bag, drags her away from the closet.
Danziger and True reach the pod. Yale, Adair, Uly and O'Neill are already
there. Alonzo and Julia arrive. Alonzo asks if everyone's inside. Adair says
Go. Alonzo releases the pod. A computer voice says pod 3 is away. Yale starts
praying. True screams.

- Act III
- Inside the pod, which has crashed on the planet, people are coughing - there is
dust in the air. O'Neill tells everyone to check for injuries and to stay calm.
He asks Baines for an atmospheric reading, but sensors are down. Adair says to
open the hatch - there is nowhere else to go. O'Neill agrees and opens the
hatch. The are all momentarily blinded by the sunlight that enters the pod.
They slowly leave.
O'Neill helps Adair down from the pod. They are in a valley with pines,
meadows, and a stream. The air is filled with floating seeds, and Adair catches
some in her hands. Everyone looks around in amazement.
Julia and Adair check Uly's health. Yale tells Adair that there are no signals
from the other crafts. Julia tells Uly he is clear.
O'Neill hands Yale a pistol, telling him to keep his eye out for anything that
moves. Yale cannot accept the gun because of a weapons aversion in the Yale
program.
Julia runs her diaglove over Alonzo's leg. He says he tried to hold the ship,
but he couldn't shake the unit. Julia tells him to stop moving. He says he
just wrenched his leg, he'll be fine. She informs him he has multiple fractures
and won't be able to walk until at least tomorrow. He did take a bone-healer
vaccine? He did not; it was for the colonists, and he wasn't even landing.
True is playing with the soil and asks Danziger if it is dirt. He guesses so.
They look in awe at a rock.
Night. There are two moons in the sky, one extremely large. Bess and Morgan
are at a fire. On Earth, burning wood has been illegal since she was a kid. He
is afraid of the fire and thinks they are the only ones left alive. He feels
awful about leaving everyone like that. She tells him that he explained it;
wind shear ripped the pod off the ship and there was nothing he could do. He is
a hero.
O'Neill and Yale are looking at a hologram globe of the planet. O'Neill
identifies a glowing, red dot as one of their pod sections, Pod #12, which
contains vehicles, aircraft, and probably clothing. The other 15 pods could be
scattered all over this planet. Adair, staring at the night, asks how many more
hours of darkness they think there will be. She cannot believe this planet is
anything like Earth was hundreds of years ago. Yale says it is a second chance.
True eats her survival ration (semolina). Danziger tells her to save some of it
for later.
O'Neill tells Uly he must eat his ration because that's all there is. He calls
True to join them, then shows the kids an Indian head nickel. He explains that
people used to use coins for goods down on Earth before they got fund transfer
codes. He gives the coin to Uly for good luck. True looks jealous. After
O'Neill leaves, she tries to scare Uly out of his ration. He catches on and
throws it into the dark, telling her to go get it.
True goes after the ration, finds it, and starts eating it. A Koba is behind
her. When she sees it, she screams and rolls away. It intrigues her; she
calls it kitty, pets it, and feeds it.
The next morning, the group is walking. Three men are carrying Alonzo in a
stretcher, and Adair and Yale are pulling Uly in a cart. Danziger feels sorry
for him and carries him on his back. True looks jealous. She pulls off to look
at the Koba in her sack.
From a ridge, O'Neill spots the pod in the next valley.
The group arrives at the pod. It has gaping holes in its sides. Adair is
shocked to find that they've been robbed. They are not alone.
(Up to Table of Contents)
- Act IV
- Yale and Danziger are searching through the empty, robbed bay of the pod. VTO
Aircraft, titanium building units, and a land vehicle have been stolen. The
don't know what is in the untouched bay, which is not yet open.
O'Neill looks at a large, 3-toed footprint in the sand; 25 years of probe info
indicated no sign of civilization. Adair says that whatever it is, it likes
manufactured goods. The probe info was geared for newscast; they saw what they
wanted them to see.
Walman pries open the pod hatch far enough that Danziger can pull out Zero's
head, which tells him he's got an entire body in there. When Danziger tosses
his head to someone, Zero tells him, "Easy there, pal."
Danziger sends True into the bay to look for the rest of the Zero unit. She
finds it.
Zero pulls the transrover from the bay.
Danziger carries Uly to the ATV. O'Neill comes up and says that the recon rail
is their top priority. Danziger thinks everyone should be mobile. He shows Uly
how to drive the vehicle. True looks jealous.
Adair tells Yale most of the vehicles and communication equipment are gone;
something's out there and it cleaned them out. He says perhaps they were
foolish to believe there was no intelligent life here. She tells him that
O'Neill wants to follow those tracks, but Yale thinks it might be imprudent.
True is working on the dune rail. The Koba knocks down a wrench. True calls
"Here, Kitty"
O'Neill tells Adair that their valuable equipment is just shiny beads and
trinkets to some three-toed hominid. It is theirs, and they have every right to
hunt it down. Adair is unsure.
Danziger asks True if the dune rail is ready. He and O'Neill head off in the
rail, with the Koba in the back.
Alonzo is sleeping under the parachute. He awakens into the cockpit of the ship
with alarms going off. He can walk and leaves into rocky, underground caverns.
He sees a shadow, follows the caverns away from it, and walks into a Terrian.
He wakes up, frightened.
Julia is checking Uly's breathing; it's all right, but not great. Uly is in
the red rail and races it to a tree. Julia tells Adair that at least Uly is no
worse. Adair just wants to give him a chance.
Danziger looks through binoculars in search of their equipment, but sees
nothing. The Koba accidentally fires off O'Neill's rifle in the dune rail. He
fires his pistol at it. Danziger tells him to hold off, but O'Neill will not.
The Koba throws a claw at him. O'Neill says it stings, then collapses to the
ground; his face has large wounds. Danziger goes to him and finds he is dead.
(Up to Table of Contents)
- Act V
- The group is standing around a grave on a rocky hill; the grave is crowned by a
cross. Yale leads the funeral service. At its end, Adair kneels by the grave.
After everyone else leaves, the kids stand looking into the grave. Yale asks
them if they want to talk about it. They do not understand why they put O'Neill
into the dirt. Yale tells them that sometimes you need to return to the place
you think you came from. Will they die? Not for a very long time. Everything
is different here; O'Neill died because he forgot that. If they see the thing
that killed O'Neill, they are to stay far, far away from it; the kids agree.
Zero fills in the grave.
Yale looks at the hologram globe, pointing out the locations of the
communication dish and cargo to Adair. The other 15 pods could be anywhere.
Danziger, while working on the dune rail, watches them. Zero tells him he is
equipped with a variety of retractors. Adair says they should head out once the
vehicles are operational; they wanted to be pioneers. True says they won't be
able to go home, will they? Danziger gets up to talk to Adair.
Danziger asks Adair if she is planning a trip. Adair replies they are charting
a course to New Pacifica, where they dropped the communication dish. He asks
Yale to leave so he can talk to his boss alone. Danziger tells her she is
crazier than he'd heard; she just can't drag this group over whatever land mass
this is. Half of them weren't even supposed to set foot on this planet. She is
sorry, but they didn't come this far to stop now. Are you in shock, Adair?
They have crashed on this planet, have lost most of their cargo, and a rodent
killed O'Neill. Her plans have changed! She promised the families on the
colony ship a fully operational outpost at New Pacifica in 26 months. He says
that half of them are hired hands. She reminds him that he read the risk
disclosure and was paid four times the standard cryosleep rate for this job.
And don't bring up O'Neill's death - he was her friend. He says it's about
survival, not contracts; put moving on to a vote. She says thanks for your
advice, Mr. Who? Danziger. What she really needs now is an operational
transrover. Can he handle that?
Julia sees two Terrians standing on the ridge. Everyone is scared; Adair and
Danziger frantically search for their children. Danziger locks True in the
hummer. Alonzo looks at the Terrians through a scope. True brings the Terrians
into focus on a hummer monitor and screams.
They send Zero to investigate the Terrians; they can see what he sees through a
monitor. The Terrians blind them all with light from their staffs and
disappear. Zero sees no indication of the alien bipeds, then detects movement
over the ridge. It is Bess and Morgan, walking with their luggage.
That night around the campfire, Morgan tells everyone his version of their
escape from the spaceship. Danziger is disgusted. Julia asks if anyone wants
to talk about what they saw that day. Animals? Animals don't carry staffs. An
illusion? Julia asks about the light; sun flares are just not a good enough
explanation. Adair says there are a lot of things they don't know about this
place. Danziger says it's a fine time to realize that.
True is trying to fall asleep. The Koba comes up to her and purrs. She tells
it she is not supposed to associate with it.
Alonzo is sleeping. He awakens into an overly sunny desert. Terrians start
popping out of the sand. Who are they? What do they want? Leave him! He is
suddenly on the ground beside his hammock. Julia finds him and cradles him in
her lap. He keeps repeating that he doesn't have dreams.
True walks out of camp; Uly sees her and follows in the ATV. Away from camp,
True takes the Koba out of a sack and tells it that it can't stay with them
anymore. They wave goodbye, then she holds it in her arms. Uly arrives and
says he will tell on her. She chases him and throws him off the ATV. She goes
back for him, returning in time to see him pulled into the ground by two arms.
True screams.
(Up to Table of Contents)
- Act VI
- Everyone is searching for Uly with flashlights; Adair is calling for him.
Danziger is digging in the spot were Uly was pulled in. Zero detects a gear
reading, and Danziger digs faster, but it is not Uly, just his syndrome gear.
Adair starts frantically digging with her hands until Yale pulls her away.
Danziger wants everyone else to go back to camp, but Adair refuses to leave Uly.
The rest of the group leaves; Danziger tells them to pull up stakes if anything
happens.
Danziger sends Zero's head down a hole to investigate caverns Yale found. They
are 63 meters long, an interconnected labyrinth. Zero says he comes fully
equipped with excavation accessories, but they were all stolen. Danziger tell
Adair that he will keep her informed of everything he sees as he searches for
Uly in the caverns. He tells Zero that if he hears him screaming in terror,
it's his cue to yank him out of there. Without fail, sir.
Danziger goes down into the cavern on a rope, and Zero tracks him.
True is working on the transrover. Bess comes up, introduces herself, and asks
if she can help. Bess tells her it wasn't her fault; they will find Uly. Bess
leaves, and True sees the Terrians have returned.
Actually, there are two sets of Terrians. Morgan looks at them through the
scope. He asks everyone what they're waiting for - for them to kill them too?
He picks up a weapon and fires it at a set of Terrians. The Terrians disappear.
Morgan says he showed these things who's boss on this planet. Julia calls him
an idiot, then investigates the spot where the Terrians last stood.
Danziger, down in the caverns, calls for Uly. He thinks it's an old underground
river or abandoned mine.
True tells Julia that Alonzo keeps calling for her; Julia goes to him. Alonzo
tells her that the creatures are Terrians, the ones that swim up from the earth.
She asks him if he is with her and waves her hand in front of his face; he
holds it. How does he know what they're called? He talks to them.
Yale tells Adair to go back to camp and get some rest. She says 22 light years
for this? Why did she bring all these people here? Yale reminds her that they
followed her. She says maybe they're not supposed to go to the end of the
universe to save themselves. Yale thinks they just haven't gotten there yet.
Julia calls in on gear. She thinks she knows who or what has Uly.
(Up to Table of Contents)
- Act VII
- Julia tells Adair that she is not sure her idea will work, but she thinks it
makes the most sense. The soil on the ridge was disrupted the same as it was
where Uly was taken. Maybe the Terrians are trying to approach them through
Alonzo's dreams. They could trying putting him under. Alonzo says that all he
said was that he saw them in a dream. Yale reminds them that Uly was not taken
in a dream.
Danziger calls in. He has found a smooth, odd-shaped column. He does not think
animals live down there.
Adair decides to go after Uly. She is not just sitting around waiting anymore.
She gives herself the sedaderm and floats to the ground in the dream cavern.
Julia checks Adair and tells Alonzo that it isn't right; they approached him
and he has to go with Adair.
In the dream cavern, Adair calls for Uly. In the real cavern, Danziger can hear
her. Alonzo joins Adair in the dream cavern. A Terrian pops out of the sand,
followed by others. Adair is frightened but asks where her son is. Uly swims
up from the sand, calls Mom!, and sinks back in. She dives for him.
She is back on the ship. She watches her first conversation with Julia, then
watches herself kiss Uly before he went into cold sleep. She sees an empty,
moving wheelchair and runs after it. Uly is there calling for her.
Adair is suddenly in the dream desert with Alonzo. He says the Terrians fear
them, are confused by them. The Terrians are aware that Uly is special,
different. His abduction is an attempt to understand them though him. The
dream plane is real; it is the only way they can reach them. Two Terrians
appear. Adair sees Uly in the sand, but cannot reach him before he sinks back
in. She throws herself to the ground in great despair.
Adair and Alonzo are back in the dream cavern with the Terrians. The Terrians
talk, and Alonzo translates. The Terrians claim they've been to this planet
before. They fear they're evil; they've left their mark on the planet already.
Uly's return would have a price. Adair will do anything; she will give her
life for her son's. It is different for the Terrians. The Terrians start
fading back into the cavern walls. Adair asks about Uly. The last remaining
Terrian holds out its hand. Adair follows it and asks what it wants, what it is
asking. Though she is frightened, she gives the Terrian her hand, and it pulls
her into the rock.
Danziger finds Uly in the cavern. A Terrian in the shadows leads them out.
The next morning, Adair wakes up. She doesn't know what happened, but she walks
to a meadow. Uly, without syndrome gear, comes running across to her. She
catches him and swings him about. He is okay.
The group is gathered, listening to Adair talk. She says if they can average 20
km a day, they can make it to New Pacifica in 9 months and will have 17 months
to prepare for the colonists. She doesn't understand this new world better than
any of them, but she knows New Pacifica is there and they will be all right
there. Indicating a healthy Uly, she says they've all seen something to help
them believe that. Morgan says they should just take off, just like that?
Adair looks at Danziger and says, no, she thinks they should take a vote. Julia
is the first to raise her hand, followed by all but Morgan and Bess. Bess
smiles.
The group heads off, starting their trip across the desert. Mostly they are
walking, but some are in the vehicles. In narration, Adair says that they came
to this planet a group of strangers, and now they head out, still strangers, but
united toward a single purpose, braving this new land. Four days ago, aliens
landed in a distant planet, and they are them. Now they struggle across an
unknown planet, an uncharted world, looking all the while for that moment when
they must fulfill their promise and wondering what will stand in their way.
Alonzo says to Adair that he doesn't know what kind of promise they made or what
kind of price they'll have to pay. She replies that she doesn't know either,
but she knows she'd make it again.
As the group walks on, Gaal stands on a ridge and watches them head off
